|
|
I'm being offered a Chung Dahm position in Daechi starting August and I wanted to ask you guys what you thought of it. I think the pay is pretty good, 28,000 won an hour, however school days consist of teaching 2 3-hour classes, 4-7 & 7-10pm. Also I get 2 days off a week, but not necessarily the weekend. They said something like 6 months of the year I would work Saturday. Is 30 teaching hours normal for a newbie?
I am a fan of late hours, I wanted an afternoon/evening position, but I think this job might be running too too late for me. I know the subway stops at midnight so I feel like I probably couldn't even go anywhere at night, plus the location seems kind far from central Seoul.
I would prefer something like 1-7pm but all the other Seoul based offers I've seen are from infamous chains like SLP and Kids College. And I've heard things about CDI like they make you teach their way etc, but I wouldn't mind, in fact I think I would like to be told how to teach because I'm a newbie. I am attracted to CDI because I haven't heard of them pulling crazy shady stuff like other hagwons.
I am receiving the contract soon so more details to follow, any advice is appreciated greatly |

Hahaha. Thanks for brightening me up on this miserable day. You need to do a lot more research if you haven't come across anything that suggests they are shady. |

I guess you didn't hear about the class action lawsuit against CDI over labor law violations either huh?
Couldn't have looked too hard.
Time to shake the stars from your eyes.
CDI is in the same class as Wonderland, SLP, Kids College, etc., with most of the same issues.

Last weekend, a Korean friend who works at a hagweon and I met two foreigners (one gyopo) who work at a Wonderland. My friend told me that she was surprised anyone, foreigner or Korean works at any Wonderland. It seems that Wonderland has a terrible reputation with Koreans too. |

30 hrs per week, plus another 10 hrs planning that you want get paid for.
28,000 won per hr isn't much when you don't get airfare, housing, pension, national health care, etc. Too, if you don't pass the week of training, you are back out of the country on your own dime.
Weekends, well do you really want to work weekends when others are out and about.
Pass this opportunity (cough cough) up! Look for something better. Don't fall for their fluffed up contracts. |

28,000 Won, that's supposed to be what decent!! Christ I was making 150.00 quid a day supply teaching back in blighty in 2003. I make more than the CDI wage and a teach less hours, 12 to be exact.
Didn't realise the job market was that bad in western countries, must be if these waegooks are prepared to work for peanuts in a notorious company like CDI!! |

Yea thanks tophatcat, I just got the contract and there was no airfare, housing, pension, national health care, etc. so yea its not a very good deal at all.
oldtrafford, do you feel better now about yourself showing off your job? I'm just starting out, of course someone who has been teaching for something like 10 years is going to have a much better deal then me. |

Wow, that's even better than most CDI contracts. Two days off, not necessarily concurrent? So you're going to go all year without consecutive days off? If you're going to work for a crappy school, at least get one of the contracts where you get Wednesdays and weekends off. |

No, I am not showing off, I am merely pointing out that you shouldn't consider such an offer. The conditions and the pay are terrible, if people like you keep on accepting such terrible offers then you will continue to drive the market down by stagnating wages. If you're serious about teaching then why not get some qualifications?! Why travel half-way round the world to be subjected to a low salary and poor working conditions?!Like I said things must be tough!! |
