This website is your friend for all your Japan train needs. It is easy to use and has been really helpful when I have needed to travel by train.

On the site it says there is an express surcharge. Does this mean that there are express trains sometimes and cheaper non-express trains at other times. Makes a huge difference in price if there are non-express !

Here's another great site for Japanese train schedules. If you use the "Search Details" you can customize the search to not include certain types of trains, which is great if you have any of the JR Rail Passes.

For the express trains there are two charges (sometimes you need to buy two tickets). The first price is just the cost of getting there, or the distance charge. This will be the same no matter what train you take. The second charge is the express charge, which is what will get you on the express trains. So the express trains are more expensive, sometimes the express charge is the same as the price to get there.

As an example I took the train from Kyoto to Nara last week. The distance price was 550 and the express charge was 525. You can buy the express ticket ahead of time or on the train. If I would have taken a local train (takes twice as long) it would have just been the 550.

At least that has been my experience on my trips to Japan, of someone has any other experience feel free to jump in.

Holy god the bullet train is expensive. What is the deal with the JR passes I've heard about them but not in detail. Is there a slower train from Fukuoka to Hiroshima that would cost less?

Thanks!

The slower train might get you there cheaper, but if there is one it is still going to be expensive. If you are going to be doing any other traveling the rail pass would be worth it.

Having had a look at the cost of Japan I think we may just stay in Fukuoka.

After hotel and flights are settled. How much money does one need for food and drinks. How much would a meal cost if we were talking something equivalent to a Gimbap place ? Food and drink plus a few tours how many dollars a day ?

When I go to Japan I always budget about $100 a day for everything (excluding hotels). Tours are usually really expensive, so tours will eat into that very quickly. Cheap meals will be under $10, but not that much under. Middle range will be around $20, and expensive meals get really expensive. Japan is expensive, and not having enough money is not fun, so take more than you think you will need.

I have done the cheap route, but it is just a much more enjoyable experience if you have the money to do what you want to do, which might mean spending a little more on a meal.

Thanks a million for the info. $100 a day is what one of my friends recommended too.

However I'm not sure from your post whether $100 a day is going the cheap route or the middling route !
