I am in negotiations right now and the employer has it in the contract that the health insurance will be through AIG and paid for in the usual 50/50 manner. Is this normal? Can they do this? I enquired as to why it was not through the public health system and was told that this is commonly done, as well as being less expensive.

Less expensive for them, yes. You're likely being screwed as NHIC is mandatory unless you're listed as a "private contractor" in your contract. Unfortunately, it is commonly done. What is your tax rate? You should mention the term "labor board" to your boss and see if you can get this turned around before you end up getting shorthanded on anything else. I'm in the same position, start doing your research and get to know what your options are from here. Good luck.

My guess is that they have me listed as a private contractor as the tax rate quoted in the contract is 3.3%.

Find another job. You are getting screwed on the health insurance, and are getting majorly screwed on the pension. On top of all that, the tax rate is like 1.9%, so you're way overpaying for tax, which undoubtably is going into the director's pocket (or the local soju bar).

Someone who is shady from the beginning is surely to be shady in the end when you've got your had out for your 5,000,000 won contract completetion benefits.

The "supplemental" insurance they get WON'T cover you for anything that NHIC does. It is basically useless.

Good news is that it is nice to know right off the bat that they intend to screw you for the whole year.

Be sure to bring your lube with you; they are crooks and not only are you getting screwed on the medical, you are also getting taxed at just about double the rate you should be taxed and AND you won't get your NPS (pension) refund either.
