Korea definitely hires fat foreign teachers. As for some saying that there is more competition in Seoul: MAYBE in a trendy part of Seoul but in most of Seoul being fat won't make a difference.

Personally, I am an obese American. I made sure that there wasn't any physical duties involved with my job (such as sports or field trips) before I signed my contract.

I told my students that I've been fat for as long as I can remember and that I've never been able to loose weight. Most of them are very understanding and I almost never get made fun of.

Another thing to be aware of is that (if you are very overweight like me) that you might get sore knees while standing so long from teaching and that you will want to be very careful on the buses here if you have extra trouble with your balance.

Rolling Eyes More lies from Mr/Ms Recruiter Troll. The majority of old/older/less sightly looking/truly fat foreigners will not be given the opportunity to work in competitive Seoul where hagwons pick and choose teachers mostly based on age and appearance as they all fight for a piece of the market.

The majority of recruiters feed this and also helped create this biased approach by denying good jobs to people with good qualifications who are older and don't look like models. This has been noticeable over the past 3 years. Why don't you just poq from the eslcafe?

OP, don't worry about getting a job here. What you should be prepared for though (as is obvious from this thread as well as others on Dave's) is having to deal with the large number of disgustingly judgmental, insecure, and childish foreigners. Just get all your documents in order, present yourself as best you can, and you will have no trouble finding a job.

There are plenty of fat people in Korea teaching English. That will NOT change Korean opinions about fat people though. To them, all fat lard asses are lazy and stupid. Get used to it. It will never change. If you think that Koreans and foreigners are going to be all PC about it like they are back home, you're in for a rude awakening.

I have been offered a contract without an interview just with a CV, my employer had no idea how I looked like when they offered me the job.

Personally, I consider most of the people that I work with overweight, and I have seen numerous overweight people come through the place where I work for training (this is a hagwon). Lots of schools go through crunch periods where they need teaches fast, and I don't think your weight is something they really consider (besides, lots of people don't look the same in their applications as when they show up at Incheon).

However, I will say that the students and other people in general are incredibly critical of appearance, so if you are sensitive or have low self-esteem, you might want to think twice about putting yourself in that position. I have had students call me fat numerous times, and my body fat percentage is about 4%. I have never considered myself overweight.

I have also been told by students and teachers that I look tired and sad.

Best of luck!

As long as you have great qualifications it wouldn't matter, plus be prepare for the interview.

Like any good American, I eat too much - and it shows! Ha. I know Korea won't hire fat teachers, but what about other Asian countries? And how come when I go on YouTube and search for "teaching ESL in korea" I sometimes get a video of portly, dumpy looking men teaching. I don't understand how they got jobs?

And what about outside of Korea - is any part of Europe more open minded?
