Julian Assange has called Facebook "The most appalling spy machine ever built".
http://youtu.be/HTeL2BScIgQ
In an interview, he went on by saying how Facebook account holders voluntarily post all kinds of personal information that the CIA, FBI and other government agencies can get access to.
You don't get something for nothing in this world, so my question is "Is it worth having an account"?
Facebook also looks to me like a big time waster. Am I right? |

Facebook is very useful to organize events. While using Facebook you should treat everything on facebook as public knowledge. Having facebook and using facebook doesn't have to take more than 5 minutes every second day. I would have missed out on half of the fun things that is happening in my city if it wasn't for facebook. Updating your status is in my opinion NOT one of the important features of facebook. |

Congratulations on using the name "Facebook" seven times in your short response - now get away from your computer and get a life somehow because you are one of the people the OP was talking about as being most at risk. |

The OP listed two problems with Facebook, security and wasting time. I haven't posted anything that would be harmful to me, so I don't consider the security a threat even if there was no security. Secondly, it certainly does take some time, but I make a post maybe once every two week or so, and check it for events about once a day. This take some time, but are there any more efficient ways to find out the current events around me? The alternative would be to call all my friends and ask them what's up, which would certainly take more time. I think I have weighted the pro's and con's pretty well, and came to the conclusion that the benefits outweighs the risks for me. |

I've never had an account and knowing that people can't get access to my information helps me sleep at night. |

fb is a key component to my social life and has helped me make so many contacts and new friends that i would say easily that it's worth it. i actually feel sorry for those who haven't learn how to utilize facebook properly.
however i'm not one of those anti social networking people who are afraid of "the man" or thinking that anyone gives two whoops about my personal information or any of that asinine thinking. i'm the type of person where i'm not a government target and if anyone wants to snoop on my facebook account they won't find anything i won't tell them to their face.
i keep it smart though and i don't post anything too personal and i honestly don't care whether or not i sleep at nite because i'd rather be out having fun and making new friends. to add to facebook. |

Aren't you worried about becoming " a person of interest" by your paranoid government? If you have a "friend" in your friends section that commits a crime or belongs to an organization that the gov doesn't like, such as Greenpeace, you might become a person of interest.
You know that the U.S. gov in particular likes to grab people it doesn't like (especially if you look middle eastern) and drag you off to Gitmo without charges and torture you and keep you there as long as they like.
That's an extreme example, but a more possible outcome of being on Facebook is being targeted by marketers because you hit the "Like" button on some type of product. |

i can't honestly say i'm worried about it. the government can check into me all they want if i have a friend in greenpeace, etc., but they won't be finding anything worth taking to the press.
as for the marketers, it does annoy me but the pros of a "free" service like facebook far outweigh the cons (at least for a person like me). plus i do realize they have to make their money somehow. |
