This is so cute! I've always wanted to start my own meaningless crusade as well.  Anyways, if you honestly believe that the fight starts at Dave's in terms of getting Koreans to stop calling you a retard....then...perhaps you should seriously reconsider whether those Korean students you've mentioned aren't on to something.
Who says Korean kids aren't bright!?  |

| I'm sure when people post on this board, not offending Koreans isn't exactly their number one concern. We as ESL teachers are bombarded with so much cultural stress that we are forced o find an outlet for our frustrations, and unfortunately some times it takes the form of anti-Korean rhetoric. While I'm not condoning it, I'm sure every one with a western background has felt this way at least once. If Koreans read this board and get offended, then they definitely shouldn't watch mainstream T.V. in America, where characatures of their culture are presented frequently. |

Quite a few of my university students have expressed surprise at finding out that I came to Korea out of interest in Asian people, culture and language, and that I took a pay cut to come here. Their impression of Western ESL "teachers" is that we are mostly people who can't find a decent job at home and come here to get easy money and party at the same time, without any particular skill at or interest in helping our students actually attain what they need, and no interest in acquiring either. I try to convince them otherwise, but the scarcity of good examples is a difficulty.
I know my opinion on this is unpopular, but I don't mean to offend anyone. I only offer my experience (15 years and counting) as a plea for people to take their jobs more seriously, whether you're here for just a year to pay off student loans or whatever your motivations are.
Just step into some Korean shoes for a few minutes and consider the possibility that they might actually be human beings, just like you. (Generic 'you', of course.) Would you want to learn Korean from an apathetic, selfish, arrogant and hedonistic Korean who knows nothing about second language acquisition theories and who dresses and acts like s/he's on a perpetual Spring Break?
If hagwon owners and university administrations treat us like shit, it's largely because our predecessors acted like shit and set the stage for the rest of us. If we want to affect a change for the better, we need for more of us to step up and behave more professionally than they did.
But, of course, a selfish *beep* who's only going to be here for a year won't give a rat's ass about the effects his behavior has on the rest of us. Que sera, sera.
To those of you who do take your careers here seriously, please understand that this post is NOT directed at you. Only the slackers and parasites who give us all a bad name. |

If I see 'Spring Break' mentioned one more time I'm gonna run amuck down the street. Have you never heard of supply and demand? You're relying on moral suasion alone.
The type you describe is what Koreans are asking for, someone who doesn't mind stuff and won't dent the budget too much. That's fair. As opposed to what you're saying.....must learn lingo and act Korean. |

It's a bit different.
While it's true there's a lot of nastiness on Youtube, there is however the disable comments function if you want the idiots to go away.....from your video at least.
But the netizens have caused, or at least significantly contributed to, quite a few high-profile cases where people's lives have been ruined and even led to suicide with chat-room gossip.
I'd certainly believe that somebody at sometime might feel that Youtube comments could ruin their life.......but I see it actually happen at least twice-yearly in Korea these days. |

Here is an example of it's Korea. I am staying at a motel though I paid key money for an apartment. Why? I wanted to put a bed in yesterday, but the owner told my realtor he wanted to paint. In the end, he didn't.
I had given him the key yesterday. Then, when I go to pick it up, I call him, and he tries to explain he wants the key tomorrow to make a copy. He had the key all day yesterday and most of the day before that when I met him. He couldn't do it, then? And I got told by my realtor that the painting was going to be delayed until next week some time. Then, she wakes me up at 7 a.m. something about the paining guys are at the apartment. I was pissed. I need my sleep. I end up locking the phone I got from another foreigner and hitting the lock instead of vibrate button because I don't want to be disturbed so early. No one calls me that early. This is not the way to do business. This stuff doesn't happen in America or the West. If you say you're gonna paint tomorrow, then do it. Don't say you couldn't that day, and say you're going to do it next week, then call me. I am not amused, really.
Now, I have to mess with unlocking this phone...I need that phone while waiting for my ARC. |
