How much notice to give a hagwon?

Hey there...

Both myself and a friend are in a bit of a sticky situation - the situation being that we want to leave our current hagwon. We have not said anything yet, but we are getting pretty fed up with the job - we have no rest periods at all during the day and we have had to work with little or no curriculum for over two months. The school does not provide resources either (pencils, stationery), so it seems perhaps they are on the poor side..
We have had cockroaches in our apartment for about the same length of time and despite mentioning it several times, our director has not gotten an exterminator in, but given us a few traps to set up to to catch them..of course, they are still creeping about..anyways we have been on the verge of walking out several times, but we have no money til payday so we cant. They held onto half our first months wages and said we get it back when we leave. We presume this is our flight money.

My friend just wants to walk as soon as we get paid, yet I dont wanna let things get too dirty, especially if we want to get another job in Korea. We have been looking into other countries though aswell. However, regardless, I would rather try to have some sort of discussion before we leave and offer some notice. I dont wanna get totally screwed either though (not get paid)

We will be at our hagwon just over four months when we decide to leave. (One months time) What kind of notice will they expect? Ive been advised that maybe if we try to negotiate, they will issue us a LOR. Failing that, we have begun compiling new papers in Ireland for a new visa.

I would appreciate any help or advice on this as we are almost at the end of our tether.

If your hagwon has been fair about everything else, then give them 30 days or whatever time is in your contract. They'll likely deduct the flight to Korea, then you can be on your merry way with a LOR.

If your hagwon has been dishonest (being poor is not being dishonest) in any way, consider the money that they are holding as your flight money being deducted, then leave WITHOUT notice (as soon as you get paid).

There is no mention of notice in the contract. As for the school being dishonest, I wouldnt say that they are...more so just cutting corners. We are considering going to China now, so I guess a LOR is only necessary if we want to stay in Korea...

We do not know what the money was withheld for. I guess we should have asked there and then.

Not giving any notice and just leaving is really risky, you can be banned from returning to Korea for a year and have it on your immigration record for 5 years.
Best advice is to give in your notice and leave if your not happy, they can't force you to stay.
Also remember they don't have to release your Visa to another school or give you a positive reference if they don't want to.

I had a similar issue with my last school and I just went back home for a holiday and got my documents before returning to Korea and finding a new role.

DO NOT GIVE NOTICE

If you give notice you won't get paid. Just leave after payday and say hello to China. If you wait too long, you will have to go to Hong Kong or Thailand to get a visa for China.

This is nonsense and this is true.

Your employer cannot legally withhold the salary deduction from your first month UNLESS it was in your contract and you foolishly agreed to it before you started work. File a claim at the labor board for it. http://www.moel.go.kr/english/topic/laborlaw_view.jsp?idx=254&tab=Standards

After you get it, leave - the day after you get all your pay (your workplace will be sour after a labor board fight anyway).
