two of my first year high school students got expelled for kissing last Friday...not suspended, not even punished. expelled. no questions asked.

Apparently they were caught on a CCTV outside of their dorm and it wasn't even a french kiss. it was a smooch.

I personally think the principal went a little power crazy there.

In contrast, a few months ago, two 2nd year boys were caught wasted and covered with beer cans in their dorm room and the only punishment they got was a month suspension from the dorm. They could still go to school.

Are you in Seoul?

Sounds to me like the usual jealous patriarchal system at work, but I'd be surprised if this happened in central Seoul.

I'm surprised to hear that there was any punishment at all for drinking here.

I have known for years that such contact is forbidden in high schools and have seen a teacher get opposite sex couples in trouble for holding hands on school grounds. I haven't checked lately and thought it might have been relaxed but some schools really make it a no-no.

I actually support such rules and think it makes the students concentrate better on their studies.

you'd think that if kissing got you expelled, then dong chiming would get you imprisoned.

Interesting. Maybe this helps explain why same-sex contact is a social norm here? Physical contact is a psychological need...maybe the centuries of restriction have brought forth a watered-down, culturally institutionalized version of prison lovin'? Laughing

I work at a girls school in a small conservative city. Teachers here don't care if their students are holding hands, or smooching, with their boyfriends. Although they won't let random male students get onto campus though.

what's your point? this is korea. it's a little different from what you're used to in the west.

The schools that I worked at the rule about couples only applied while they were on school property. How they enforce it is up to the principal and vice-principal.

this was in Bundang. it's relatively relaxed here, even compared to Seoul and I have seen plenty of other high school students in the area holding hands/smoking/etc...

the rules at the school I work at are specific, but normally, students are punished using detention/kicked out of dorm/extra work (e.g. gardening, which always cracked me up).

But this was the first time that i've heard of someone being expelled for smooching...I think they took it a little too far!

ironically, most students are unlikely to change and this won't serve as a lesson to anyone as I've already heard about someone else drinking in the dorm.

The expelling of these students for kissing actually surprises me for I was told,by one of the Korean teachers on the disciplinary committee, that expelling was limited to absences only. Now different school may have different regulations but he seemed to imply it was country wide.

It often comes down to what type of top administration you have. If the principal/VP are of a conservative bent, expelling kids for smooching isn't so surprising.
