Hi all - the posts in this thread are incredibly informative!

Does anyone have information regarding foreigners and admission to law school in Korea? I understand that the legal education system in Korea was changed recently (law school vs. law major as an undergraduate). I am seriously contemplating studying in Korea and trying to decide between a GSIS program and law school (if possible).

sidenote: I can speak/read/write Korea rather well so taking classes in Korea should not be a problem.

I'm applying to the Korean Studies programs under the GSIS. I got my BA in Korean and i'm hoping to get my MA and PH.D in Korean as well to be a professor one day - -

I am considering an MAtesol or MA in ELT or Aplied Lingusitics either distance learning from the UK or maybe attending here in Korea.

1. Would one be able to study one of the above at a Korean uni and receive scholarships?

2. My Korean ability is very low despite over 5 years here - but would that even matter on an MA that is focussed on teaching English anyway?

3. In the UK we don't had gpa's. How then would I be assesed for entry or for funding?

4. Yeah again - do korean unis even offer those courses / those cources plus scholarships?

I've looked on a few of their websites, but boy are they poorly desgined websites, very hard to find anything out at all.

If your end goal is to become a professor, you'll have a better shot if you do your Ph.D. in N. America. Doing your MA here is fine, and I often recommend it to those interested in improving there in-country experience and skill set.

Once you're about half way though your MA here, you'll need to start applying to Ph.D. programs in N. America. Look for Ph.D. programs ranked in the top 10 for your dicipline, Many times the overall university ranking will be lower, so you'll want to get the best value for you (e.g. biggest name, highest ranked school with a top-10 ranking for the department housing your dicipline). Second, you'll need to sniff out funding opportunities. It is not uncommon to not receive funding your first semester or two into a Ph.D. program, but some programs may provide funding from the get-go. Follow the coin.

Of course, you could just apply to a Ph.D. program in N. America straight away. You get your MA along the way, but an upside is that you won't have to deal with applying to grad school and then applying again to Ph.D. programs. Just a thought.

I live in Busan now though, so would need to find a place in busan. I guess I'm going to be looking at Sept / Oct 2012 now right?

I doubt they do distance learning, do they? That would be my first preferance, but on campus whilst being able to work at least enough to live well would be a good second option.

American friends at my uni agreed that a 70% at a british uni was worth a much better grade at an American one, much tougher grading they said fwiw. I agree though our country should get with whatever system is most common throughout the academic world.
