the Wonder Girls example is just precious. Those poor girls desperately need a hamburger, as they're kept starved on a 900 calorie a day "diet". (like SNSD and all other girlie groups so they can retain their "I have the body of a 13 year old boy" figures)

I'd say 2 fists of that "punch rice" that all my kids constantly buy would probably exceed their 900 calorie daily limit.

in a similar article, the Minister (who's clearly a fool, or else just trying to drum up govt money for this sure to fail "investment") says foreigners can't remember "gojuchang" or "hot pepper taste" so it's best just to call it "Korean jam" and then they'll remember it and request it that much more!

Because obviously eating a diet of mainly rice, noodles, and fermented cabbage is what humans evolved to eat. The "Korean Jam" thing is hilarious. Obviously thought up by someone who has no idea what "jam" means anywhere else. Look at Sriracha sauce, it's 1000x more popular than Gochujang but has an even weirder name. The difference is that Sriracha is spicy and tastes good, and Gochujang is bland and not even close to being spicy.

Korean food is the most disgusting cuisine I've ever had in all my travels. Hell it's the only BAD food I've had in all of Asia (haven't tried natto yet--hell no).

Korean food is not the worst in Asia. That award would have to go to the Philippines.
Korea has probably the worst seafood I've had in Asia, though. Spicy boiled rubber anyone?

I'd still take it over Korean, because I'd find more things I like.

English "food" is bad.

there aren't many cuisines that ever expand far beyond its borders. Those numbers are actually small.

it takes a special kind of ethnic pride and foolish unsubstantiated conviction that Koreans certainly don't lack to think YOUR food will become popular outside of your own borders and culture.

another thing to note: most famous "international" cuisines I can think of all come from countries in warm or temperate climates.

English food is not bad its just bland, potatoe and meat sort of stuff. Although we do have exceedingly good cakes.

It worked out well though as English food is so boring we have to import foreign foods to enjoy life.

In my tiny hometown in rural Staffordshire we have all manner of cuisine from the sub-continent, Thai, Mexican, various Chinese places not to mention all the European restaurants and a McDonalds for a little bit of Americana.

Now compare that to Korea which has a poverty of foreign cuisine even in Seoul. Lucky is the country that has rubbish food.

To agree with the above poster, it's not accurate to say British food is bad because in most areas of Britain you can find high-quality exotic foods from around the world.

Even Tesco's has enough variety for an amateur chef to put together a great meal.....never mind the more upper-class places like Sainsburys and the dozens of food speciality shops you can find in most British towns.

Lots of British people eat garbage, true, but these days at least in Britain we can say we have a choice.

Unlike in Korea, where you have to hunt out exotic international ingredients like it's still the 1950's!! And that's even if you live in Seoul! A city of 12,000,000.........the international food scene really is appalling in Korea. Because the consumer doesn't want it? Or the retailers don't supply it? I dunno.



As for Korean food, well, I love most Korean food, but it must be recognized that it is a cuisine born out of poverty. Lots of Korean dishes have very cheap ingredients. That worked well to feed Koreans in the past, but now that many Koreans have lots of money I'd like to see more dishes enriched a bit with better quality meat, veg, etc...and less focus on rice.

I'll say this, I don't know about food/cuisine, but Mexicans are hands-down the best cooks per capita in the world and can make lemons out of lemonade. I'd put the Chinese in a close second with probably some Middle-Easterners/Greeks third.

I mean your French, Spanish, and Italian chefs are great and all, but get them out of their element and they are 'meh'.

Mexicans you could throw in any kitchen around the world and within two meals they'd have it tasting great.

I think food is probably going to decline in any developed country. People grow up with supermarkets and instant food and whatnot and don;t develop those third-world cooking skills.

Look at what happened with Korea and the liberal doses of corn syrup in the Ddukbokki. I bet if you ate ddukbokki 40 years ago it'd taste a heckuva lot better than it does now.

i don't mind korean food, but yeah, it is on the bottom of the list as far as Asian cuisine goes.

thai and viet are on the top for me.

and i agree that filipino food ain't great at all... which is weird since they have so much produce available to them. it's just an oily vinegary version of chinese food plus their random love for spaghetti and fried chicken.

I think Korean food can be pretty great if you dig on the red pepper paste. If you don't like it, you are up shit creek.
