Also, it can help many FTs brush up on their Korean or pick up useful expressions.
Its not pretentious unless its used to show off.... |

Absolutely. My pet hate is the romanization of 김밥. Kimbab, gimbop etc
How one romanizes 'bop' from 밥 is totally beyond me, 브라 |

because the word bop sounds similar to 밥, lets keep in mind when translating from any language to another and using romanization that things arent entirely perfect.
i think caLLING it pretentious, might suggest that you are secretly jealous of those who know how to do it? lol
seriously though, this is a forum for things korean, if someone types in it, lets not have a sissy fit. If you dont understand it, im sure someone will translate it or something close to it |

i find people changing their facebook name to hangeul after being in korea for a month to be pretty freakin' pretentious.
i also don't see the point in using hangeul on an english forum either, particularly if the author knows for a fact that there are new members who can not read it, but i guess there are exceptions. |

how does hangul, the world's most perfect and scientific alphabet define the sound of something in between a k and a g?
or better yet, how does it teach your mouth, tongue and throat to make said sound? |

I prefer learning new Korean words in Hangul, sometimes seeing the butchered Romanization screws up my ability to remember the word correctly because of how messed up the Romanization is.
I live in Incheon and always think of the pronunciation of the Spanish name "Juan" in reference to the 주안 area. |

| Not only is it pretentious, it's also exclusive and completely unecessary. As I've said before on here, if you can't express yourself in your own language to other native speakers of your language you have serious communication problems. If you use Korean you will exclude some people from the dialogue. OK they might be lazy for not speaking Korean but if you write something in Korean which they don't understand you are unecessarily excluding them. Why would you feel the need to do this except to either show off or deliberately force people out of the debate? If you want to brush up on your Korean there are better places to do this online or in real life than an English speaking forum. Think about a meeting with 5 native speakers in real life and two of them suddenly started speaking Korean to each other, knowing that one or more of the others at the meeting didn't speak Korean. Would that seem like normal behaviour to you? So why is it ok on the internet? Sure they could ask one of them to translate but isn't it easier if they just don't speak Korean in the first place? |

Korean is rarely, if ever, used on here as a medium of communication (i.e. people writing whole sentences in Korean for purposes other than requested translations). I don't think most of us have much problem communicating in English.
I can't speak for others, but I will generally use it in situations where there's no good English word, or the "romanization" is likely to be difficult to write or understand (as so many are). I don't want to spend 30 seconds trying to figure out how to properly write something in Latin characters so that's it understood by my target audience, most or all of whom would understand the Korean expression that it takes two seconds for me to write. If, for example, we're talking about 된장녀 (Doenjangnyeo - now doesn't that look ridiculous?), pretty much everyone in the debate will probably be more familiar and comfortable with the Korean spelling than the ghastly romanization. |

| I don't mind it so long as it is not excessive. Using hangul also avoids the Romanization pissing contests people get into here. Soooo annoying... |
