|
|
I've been teaching an adult conversation class for about 2.5 years. I teach them for an hour, 4 nights a week and although most of the students stay 3-6 months, a couple of them have been with me almost the whole time. That means I've taught those students over 400 times each, and so I've used up most of my great ideas.
So I'd like to ask you for any great suggestions that you have for a high-level class. Is there anything you've tried that has worked really well? The class is usually only 3-5 students. I'd appreciate any ideas that really get them speaking.
Thanks |

I've had success using the Proust Questionnaire (from Vanity Fair). See my blog post and download resources there. http://bit.ly/nEqdpA
You might also try my Lessons in A Can on EFL Classroom 2.0. I'd also show your students EnglishCentral http://www.englishcentral.com Really works with high levels and you can use the videos for discussions.
Cheers, GL

High level -- they might enjoy some puzzles like crosswords if you can find some that are not too easy or too difficult. If they do, you can get a lot of mileage from those. Lots to talk about, idioms and stuff. Just an idea as an activity. This site might help too: iteslj.org (no www in front) |

Okay, thanks for the replies. They should help me change things up a bit for my students. |

Small Group Discussion Topics for University Students by Jack Martire is lots of fun! I highly recommend it. |

Do a Google search for short ESL topics, you'll find lots of them. Present the material and let them talk. They can do it in teams and present the group opinion or just speak individually. Stay away from certain topics, tho, if you get my drift.
Once I did a topic on what should they do with the DMZ if Korea ever reunites. Green tourism, leave it alone or build it up? It was a very lively class.
In another class, I would bring a notebook computer and we'd watch a 20 minute episode of Twilight Zone and talk about it. I'd give a bit of the plot and they'd watch it, then we'd discuss it. They liked that, as well. They were interested in Rod Serling, too. We had a discussion class about him as well. |
