Go to a bank where you have an account. Most should provide the service for free, as loans, mortgages and the such all need notarization.

Notarization isn't too terribly rare.. or so I thought. O.o;

That's in America. OP is from the UK.

Aye, I realize that. I obviously don't know for sure, but if legal documents in the UK require notarization too (as it seems), shouldn't banks (or courthouses for that matter) have a notary around somewhere? One would think so. Twas just a suggestion. =)

Ok, this is getting a bit clearer now, notaries charge 40+ and are highly specialised, normal solicitors charge 5+ and just use their practise stamp. This also explains why i got quoted such wildly varying costs to get the stamp...

Exactly, you don't want to get fleeced by some Solicitor who's a Notary too, and wants all your cash.

Any solicitor can swear your disclosure scotland CRC is legit, and ditto for the Uni degree copy (they may have to call your uni to check, and call disclosure scotland possibly), then they have to write that they certify it as genuine on the back, then the practice stamp, and their name and signature and date.

The FCO will not apostille a doc that just has a stamp; it has to be signed and certified and dated by an individual registered solicitor from that practice.

Ignore this crap about 'Notarisation'. You just need any registered solicitor to 'certify as genuine/a genuine copy', personally sign it, date it, stamp it, done. Then send that to the FCO for the apostille.

Shouldn't cost more than 5 pound for each document to be certified as genuine. Any solicitors who try to charge you 40 or 50 pound for the honour of a signature are literally trying to rob you blind. My mate comes to Korea next month, he had to go to 4 solicitors to find one who didn't either directly lie to him, or try to rob him.

Where were you before? You could've saved me a fortune. I paid 70 for one doc. The Criminal Check I got it for free from Disclosure Scotland.

If you ever wanted proof that most Lawyers/Solicitors are utter scum bags, there is it! There might be the odd exception, but I guarantee they know full well you don't need a Notary stamp, and you only need it certifying, but they'll tell you that you need the former anyway.

One solicitor even told my mate he couldn't sign the Disclosure Scotland CRC because he couldn't prove it was genuine (despite my mate pointing out the watermarks on the document, and telling the solicitor he can ring them to check), so he'd have to send it to the Notary in another office, that will be 60 pounds please.

Scum.
