IF you want to ensure that your visa is indeed canceled so you can return BEFORE the year is up then you MUST:
go to immigration within 14 days of leaving your employment, (after you quit working)
tell them that you quit,
GET AN EXIT ORDER (ensures that they actually did cancel the visa)
and
then you have until the date of the exit order to find a new job and do a visa run.
. |
So, is there no need for a letter of release in this situation? |
IF you want to transfer from one school to another you DO need the LOR.
IF you want to quit, LEAVE, return and begin work again with a NEW visa then you do NOT need the LOR provided your visa was canceled (by getting the exit order).
In the specific case of this thread, EPIK will NOT grant a LOR so the OP or others in the same boat will need to quit, notify immigration AFTER they have finished work, get the exit order, find a job, do a visa run and start again from scratch. |
So, with EPIK it's not possible to leave after six months, and go work at a different school without leaving the country, and getting all of your documents again? Man... that really sucks! |

There used to be a clause in the (standard EPIK) contract (as well as the SMOE contract that specifically denied the LOR on early termination of your contract.
I don't know if it is in the current contract (too lazy to look at the moment) but it is STILL in the policy handbook that is sent to the schools.
With GEPIK it was a grey area and you could occasionally transfer from one PS to another during the mid or end of term breaks but USUALLY it required a visa run and new visa rather than a LOR and transfer.
In the NEW GEPIK contracts they specifically state that changing PSs is NOT a transfer or continuation of any current contract or term of employment (in regards to increases in pay or benefits) but they still don't preclude the LOR.

Hi all -
I left EPIK six months early and had no problems. I got a job offer back home, and gave my school a two month notice stating that I really enjoyed my time and work with them (which was true), but I was offered a job which was more in line with my career aspirations, and it would be a beneficial move for my young family.
I stayed six months to the day and didn't have to repay anything, no hassles, no trouble with the POE, Immigration, or the pension people (though it took two months to get my contributions wired to Canada). If anyone has to make a move, I'd advise them to keep it above board, and perhaps try to keep any misgivings to themselves (if those are the reasons for leaving).
I had a great time in Korea and would encourage anyone to try it out for a year or two. I still think of going back one day - I'd be glad to give anyone some details if they so wished.
Good Luck!

Re-signing bonus is 2 million won. Exit allowance is 1.3 million won. If you leave before 6 months, you'll have to pay back 700,000 won. |
