Has anyone left Korea but continued to use your Korean credit card? I am leaving at the end of February and will need to use my credit card to pay for car rentals. I'm leaving money behind in my bank account to cover what we will use. I'm worried that once I leave and hand in my ARC that my credit card will stop working. |

I continued to use my samsung and woori credit cards even between ARCs and when out of the country. As long as your bill is paid on time it is no different than a C/C from home in that regard.

Primary reason why it's difficult for foreigners to get Korean credit cards. |

Despite what many people think, money can be collected from people who have left the country. If you skip on your Korean credit card, they can sell the debt to a collector in your home country who will then pursue you for payment. Or they retain ownership of the debt and pursue you themselves using debt collectors from your home country. They can also register a Korean judgement in your home country. For those that are moving to third country, they can probably find that out as well. This is particularly pertinent for those going to some countries like U.A.E. that still have debtors prison.
I have heard many US card companies do not chase internationally unless they are looking at around $50,000. I wouldn't count on Korean companies being so lenient.
If you live today, you leave a digital footprint, Facebook has been used to serve notices to appear in court, and led to the arrest of the guy that stole a few million dollars from New Zealand. |
