Postng this a favor for a friend. He likes to play guitar and has been in some bands in Canada. He is currently staying here in here in Korea with family. He wants to see if he can get some gigs. Paid or unpaid. Yes, yes I understand about the legalities.

Well I remember back years ago another friend would play electronic piano and piano at small bars or live music venues. Just him and small crowd of Korean drinkers.

My friend would like to try something similar - just playing for small crowds at bars/clubs. SO....

How would he go about doing this? What kind of setups do these places do? What is the proper way to approach these live music places? Just go in and ask?

Thanks for any info or hints.

He'd likely have to get a promoter, or become the promoter himself. It's an annoying system, where you have to pay to rent the place.

Another option is just doing the open stage circuit.

Ya I was thinking more the open stage circut too. There is a live music bar near my place and looking the Windows I sometimes see a lone Korean playing or singing. Something like that.

The only small bars I've frequented tend to have very friendly staff. It doesn't hurt to just go in and ask if they have openings...
