Kebabs. We all know and love them, but everyone has an opinion on which is best. I'd like to offer up my favorites and hear about yours:
1. Ankara Picnic (Itaewon)
Yeah, it's probably like saying you liked Pulp Ficiton. Everyone knows it, everyone goes there, and there's always a line, but the mixed kebab is damn good.
2. Sultan Kebab (Itaewon)
This one, around the corner from Quizno's, is the only kebab place I've ever been that made their spicy kebab so spicy it was almost inedible. I like that. The red sauce they put on the kebab is excellent.
3. The guy to the right of the entrance to ska2 (Hongdae)
This guy is well-built and tall and has a brother who looks a lot like him. He's super friendly, speaks great English and is always happy to see people he knows. He also makes some of the bigger kebabs in Hongdae, in my opinion. Check him out. |

My favourites are all the temporary stands only open late in the evening.
1. The guy in front of FF.
2/3 tie. The two that are around the corner from Taco Bell, facing each other. |

I like(d) Sultan. It was the original and kicked off the boom, the owner had a knack for faces and an excellent out by calling everyone "brother," and back in the day I can remember waiting for like 30 minutes in a giant line to get one of these bad boys. Sultan is the "Pulp Fiction" kebab stand, not Ankara.
That said, the girlfriend prefers Ankara, and with the "Hello My Brother" guy working there now, I've officially switched over. If they indeed have a mixed kebab, I will have to partake of one.
Who I actually miss is the dude who used to walk around in Itaewon going to the various bars with a big bag full of kebabs, selling them right on the spot for a few thousand won a pop. He had a talent for popping up out of nowhere when I was jonesin' for one. He moved over to Hongdae at some point and when I stopped going out in Hongdae so much, I stopped seeing him. His kebabs weren't awesome but they were the forerunner for the kebab shop explosion.
Spiciest kebab I've had so far goes to some stand close to the KFC. We asked for a "crazy spicy" kebab and shot fire from our anuses for the majority of the following day. |

They must have lamb. If they don't have lamb, yawn. I usually hit up Ankara if I'm in the 'won. At least I think its Ankara.... |

too bad sultans has gone through one or maybe two owners since the original. back when it was "sultan" himself, the quality was up there and the kebabs were well crafted. other day i went in, and the interim owners pictures were already off the wall, then menu was tweaked and a new guy was manning the shop. he was mopping the floor, put the mop down, made my sandwich without washing his hands, and went back to mopping. the kebab was a saucy mess. no thanks.
haven't tried ankara, but do like petra palace across from the forestation.
and the guy right outside of ska2 was the one who started the kebab explosion as far as the stands in that neck of the woods are concerned .great guy, great kebab and always good for a chat. probably my favourite kebab in seoul. |

I think you mean the place where the super friendly guy always called you "brother" right? That is the original Sultan Kebab. It used to be the only place in Itaewon to get a kebab. As it turns out, he's actually purchased Ankara Picnic. He's always working there now. Which means, that's the *only* place I'm going for kebabs these days... It's #1 by far in terms of taste and customer friendliness!
However, I've noticed the friendly Turkish guy has lost a little bit of his liveliness. He looks a tad bit unhappy or depressed. I don't want to start rumors or anything, but I heard that there was some deal gone bad. I don't know any details, or who got screwed over, but I heard someone did...
Not to change the topic, but as a side-note, wondering if anyone knows what happened to the Moroccan guys that owned Marakesh Nights (not the big one on the second floor, but rather, the smaller one near the entrance to Itaewon which only had like 5 or 6 tables).
I remember a while back the owners of Marakesh Nights (the two guys from Morocco) in the alleyway down from Berlin (across from the new Greek restaurant, almost) started drinking quite a bit. I used to have a beer with them on occasion after they closed up shop. Turns out they were scammed like $40,000 from the Moroccan restaurant up the street. These poor guys sounded pretty angry about it. I left Korea, came back, and found out that the place disappeared. Anyone know what happened to them? |

On the guy who has a kebab truck in Hongdae, if that's the guy I think he is (bald, first name David), he was deported from the U.S. after serving prison time for a murder conviction. |

The Korean guy in Kyungsung University next to the family mart (the one all the foreigners hang around). His chicken is marinated perfectly and his tzatziki sauce is good.
Right across the street from him is probably the worst, most over-priced kebab that I've had.
On a side note: what exactly is a kebab? Is it a gyro with different meat? I call things on sticks kebabs... is it just what Turkish/Indian people call a gyro? Help me out here, please. |

I've tasted some horrible kebabs in Hongdae from guys with trucks. Some aren't bad, and that's the best I can say about them.
For me, Ankara Picnic is my favorite and I wouldn't be surprised at all that the former Sultan owner got shafted on a deal gone wrong. Korea is FULL of that. |
