Really? When is the device price paid? At the end of the contract? |
You make a payment each month. It's included in your phone bill. |
What this person says is pretty spot on. The only difference is that for a lot of people when they sign you up you will pay different things.
Let's use my optimus 3-D smart phone as an example
A monthy fee for the device itself 22,000
the usage of the phone including data transfer, internet unlimited 50,000
SIM card costs (usually is 8 - 12,000) 1 time fee
Introduction into phone contract (usually 9 - 12,000 a month for 2 - 3 months)
the time you used to talked (phone talk time is billed in SECONDS which sucks!)
for my phone i pay every month 77,000 (i dont pay SIM card or intro period costs because ive been here over a year and kept the same card etc)
Thats basically what they charge you for. The only bad thing about changing your phone which i did (had the LG crystal see through phone) was that I had to pay the phone costs for 3 months and then it was taken care of, which makes sense since i didnt complete the 2 year contract i signed up for originally |

Just started at a new school. My principle handed me a cell phone and said she will be taking 800,000 won from my pay and I will have unlimited cell phone/texting in Korea for the year. She didn't give me the chance to say yes or no...
Is this a good deal?
Is it worth it?
Is it ok to give her back the cell phone if I dont want this plan or even a cell phone??
Thanks! |
Depends on the phone if it's a decent deal or not. I would say it's rather normal to use around 40.000 won a month for calling, data and messaging. It is possible to get free smart phones (actually free, not instalment plan), but they are pretty horrible. If that is the case it's a complete rip off. If on the other hand you get a brand new top model phone (iPhone or top Samsung/HTC model) then 800.000 is simply the price of the phone which makes it a good deal.
Either way, I think it was unfair of your employer to not let you chose. You could get away with less than half the cost if you just wanted a dumb-phone. |

Heh, dumb-phone.
I'm confused. chrisinkorea2011 mentioned paying 77K per month. I recently dropped my old LG plan (possibly the last 019 user!) and switched to SK and a smartphone. Problem is that I entrusted the matter to the girlfriend. The guy talked her ear off at the speed of light and then she explained the situation to me afterwards.
I haven't paid my first bill yet but I was expecting it to be 55K. Obviously I'll have to wait and see what the first bill is, but having to plop down some large device fee at the end of the contract is something I would rather not have surprise me.
It's just all so very odd. Smartphones make me feel stupid lol |

What are you confused about? maybe i can bring some light to it eh? lol the reason that my bill is 77k a month or so is because every month i pay for phone which is 24k i believe. then i have unlimited data/internet which is a set fee then i talk to my gf and family in korea a lot sometimes so the bill is right around there. you wont have to put down a large fee.
its the same as america basically because they have you in a contract they make money off of you in the long haul. If you buy a device outright without contract you pay a big one time fee for it but the phone companies still lose money because you are not pay them every month for 2 years |

I was under the impression that my plan is only 55K per month. Like I said, I haven't even gotten my first bill yet, so who knows.
Looks like I'll have to make another visit to the phone store and get the lowdown. The guy already goofed once by telling us that I can cancel the plan anytime I want and there will be no penalties whatsoever. Granted, I'm not a newb on his first E-2, but I doubt my situation warrants 55K per month and a free smartphone that I can cancel anytime! |

yeah i dont know ANY phone plan that you just cancel anytime and not face penalties lol i do know that the cost per month varies with the phone that you get. My phone is the new LG optimus 3-D phone so it might cost more? lol |

24k per month?! That doesn't sound quite right either. Although, admittedly I'm not well versed in LG smartphone plans.
With SK and KT you pay your service fees for your minutes/texts/data plus a phone installment payment plus 10% VAT.
For example, I'll use KT and a Galaxy S2.
With the new fair price plan in place you'll pay your 55k for 300/300/unlimited and 10k for a phone installment, plus 10% VAT on both of those payments for a total of 71,500원 per month.
So that means that 10k X 24 months = 240k total out-of-pocket cost for a Galaxy S2 with KT. |

Ohhh man... SO the phone is NOT a smart phone, it is really quite dumb. Its a no-name phone with no internet or anything. It just has calling and texting. Actually I wasnt even given my phone number and the whole thing is in Korean so I cant figure it out.
My boss is actually quite nice so I am sort of shocked by this. She said she was taking 800,000 from my first paycheck. Im going to give it back ASAP!
Thanks everyone!! |

if she docks your pay for this you got some serious stuff for the labor board. no way a non smart phone and plan would cost 800k up front
you can get a cheap phone and service plan for under 50k/month.
zyz, I'm willing to bet your bill will be around 70k/month, 55k for the plan plus the cost of the phone and vat, my 32gb iphone bill with a plan at 65k month costs me around 85-90k/month |

Welcome to Korea. 55K a month +VAT+handset instalment + joining fee (first five months only) will come to about 77k a month, then it will drop to about 70k a month after the first 5 months.
SURPRISE!
As far as the OP, I wonder if your boss is just trying to palm their old phone onto you so they can upgrade their own phone at no cost.
You will have to tell them you do not want a smart phone because you bought your smart phone from home which you have loaded many applications on (you can connect it here). Actually a better one, your partner, parents, uncle are giving you a smart phone for Christmas and you don't need 2. Good luck. |

Haha well that is what my bill is, sadly enough i dont even have the contract for it but i do know that my phone bill is definitely under 78,000 a month. I remember when i didnt have a smart phone before and my phone bill was actually more because of talking on it. Il see if i can find my phone contract. but i did get a good deal on it, and i love my phone so cant complain! just feel bad for the screwing that the OP is getting lol |

Just use the phone to call every and all your friends back home and rack the charges waaay up 800k-- say you didn't realize it wasn't for Korea-- I didn't get a chance to choose a plan, you don't get to choose who I call...Simple. |

lol that is the first thing that came into my mind as well. Call some random service line in the boonies in Africa with holding that doesnt answer over night, plug the phone in and just let it sit all night.
step 2: watch boss's head explode |
