Yeah schedule is a pain but its doable lol im actually near suwon it takes about 45 minutes to get to pyeongtaek. not too bad and on rapid train its like 25 or so. trains actually run until 12 or so. The big hamper is a place to train with winter and everything coming. Il ask my friend and see if she knows any good spots. Im still gonna look as far as finding a good gym/academy there for martial arts as well. im not above traveling a little bit, although there is an aikido place in seoul that tickles my fancy lol. yeah stretching is a great thing, helps keep speed up too! haha
Wish I had a phone, can you get something prepaid? Otherwise can't get a contracted phone until that card comes back from immigration. Think its another 2 to 3 weeks :/
definitely tips are a good thing, do you have a facebook? if so just pm me your email to find it or your name. No good in putting it on here for everyone to see lol. and il definitely work on putting some work into getting back into my old routine, i used to be almost possessed when it came to training! haha |

Are you interested in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? How close are you to Seongnam/Bundang? |

Im not opposed to it, however it really decides on whether or not the teacher is a good one. thoughts on the teacher/instructor? |

I think he is really cool, but I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I like his style and the gym is really nice. There is a full set of kettlebells and some heavy bags and boxing/kickboxing equipment. There are kickboxing/conditioning classes as well as no-gi jiu jitsu. There are a few foreigners and the instructor speaks great English.
Check out the facebook page and there is a link to the Daum site on there.

Chris,
Haha no facebook, but I am going to go to Songtan this weekend and try and get a prepaid phone, and get it up and running, so I'll let you know how that goes.
I hear you about the training/locations, I really would be willing to make the journey, even frequently, would be well worth it I think. Big thanks for continuing to check into the Pyeongtaek situation. Haven't been able to find much here in regards to sports and foreigner/beginner friendly martial arts. As I said, and still, haven't really looked too hard, but I don't really know how to look. My director was of no help when I asked him. Told me badminton and thats it lol, hope he is wrong :/
So I'll work on getting a phone, just lemme know what you are thinking, indoors/outdoors/if you find a spot, I am down for anything! Peace and thanks again.

Yeah definitely! let me know, i was there 2 days ago and there are plenty of places that have prepaid. Yeah its good to make the journey to train! haha but days like today where it is rainy and ugly outside make it hard to train. I saw a posting from a guy (foreigner) saying he was gonna try to train people in kempo but the guy is kind of a tool from the couple of times i met him, so be wary if you see it! lol yeah imma look today while i have free time on whether or not there is a good school in pyeongtaek. If there is a reputable one i will definitely let you know. and dont forget to be stretching a lot! haha actually i always stretch when i wake up and before i go to bed. imma look for a good spot today! and il ask my friend about her gym too. il def get back to you. maybe we can meet up this weekend in songtan and grab a bite to eat while discussing this stuff.
until then, stretch! lol

Korean Top Team has moved. It's new gym is at Daelim station about 100 meters out of exit 11. The gym is really nice with a ton of heavy bags, treadmills, some freeweights, and a nice big matted area. It's open from fairly early to fairly late M-F ... maybe like 6 or 8 AM to 10 or 11 PM with instruction a few times a day and open training in between.
The head coach is super friendly and speaks English well. The other people there are also friendly but more of a mixed bag with the English. A couple of UFC fighters, Jung Chan Sung (the Korean Zombie) and Yang Dongi train there and also teach classes sometimes.
There is a facebook page if you need more info, and if I see any posts in this thread or get a PM I'll try to respond--sometimes I don't check my websites very often. |

Hello,
Does anyone know of any BJJ and/or MMA places in the Cheonan area? Light traveling is doable, but I don't want to spend one hour or more commuting. Thanks. |

Is anyone here a part of Evolution BBJ? I would like to join but I'm afraid to go and have nobody be able to speak/translate English. How much does it cost?
Additionally, what's the best MMA school in/around Guro? |

Two posts above you. Korean Top Team is where Jung Chan Sung, The Korean Zombie, trains and is just a couple stops from Guro at Daelim station. |

Hello everyone I just moved here about a week ago and wanted to look for some martial art schools. I was wondering if anyone has any information on places to learn Kali/escrima or Chinese kung fu(really looking for anyone who teaches back Mei, wing chun, or southern mantis). I have studied some of these styles I'm the us and wanted to resume my studies. I realize in Seoul it might difficult to locate an instructor in any of these styles but I thought I would ask. |

For those of you who are near the Mapo, specifically Hongdae, area interested in the art of pugilism (western boxing) there is a gym that's in close vicinity of the subway station and the main gate of the University.
It's a legit gym that has amateur and professional fighters including a World Amateur champ. When I visited the gym during leave, there were also a few professional fighters from Japan. People who have the skill and interest can enter amateur competitons or even pro if you talk to the coach. But the gym also has people are interested in getting a simple fun workout without the bloody noses and black eyes. There are college girls, middle school kids and middle-aged business men at our gym as well.
Although my trainer can't speak English, there are a few foreigners from Japan and there was a guy from South Africa before I entered the Army. Martial arts can taught through movements and doesn't neccesarily need words. But if you catch me at the gym I'll be glad to give people a few pointers. Unless, you're better than me than I'd like to get some pointers from you.
I'm pretty excited because I'm starting training again today.
Here's some info here and a map via Naver.

There is also a cyworld and naver cafe but both are in Korean. The gym is open 10:00-23:00 on weekdays and 10:00-18:00 on Saturdays. Sundays and holidays are closed.
It's 100,000won per month plus a 30,000 entrance fee. If you sign up for 2 months, it's 180,000 and no entrance fee. For 3months, 250,000 and no entrance fee. |
Hey man, I just stumbled across this post.
Basically, I've been looking to join a boxing gym, either this month or next. I live walking distance from Hongdae so this one sounds ideal, really. The thing is that I'm a complete beginner, so how is this gonna play out for someone like me, who needs to be taught the very basics before I do anything else?
Will a trainer be there to give me some pointers about form, stance, balance, etc, right from the start, or am I just gonna be left to my own devices until I start to become a familiar face in the gym?
I'd have sent you a PM but I haven't posted enough yet. Hopefully you read this, and thanks in advance if you do! |

Can't reply to your PM. Do you wanna send me an email address I can contact you on?
I'll just reply here in the meantime. Basically, I joined a gym in the UK just before coming to Korea but because it had so many people coming and going the trainer pretty much told me to get my fitness levels up and show my face regularly before he'd give me any individual attention.
So yeah, by the time he was ready to do that I left the country, which was a bit annoying. Glad that someone at this gym in Hongdae will give me some guidance from the get-go.
I just wanna get started, really, I'm 24 now so I'm already a late starter. No point in leaving it any longer, especially as I've got a load of vacation time at the moment. |
