I thought about getting a PS3 but I'm not into gaming at all.

My LG BD-390 is good with its Youtube streaming function but I'm wondering what else is out there since Blu Ray players have taken big strides since 2009.

I currently have the same Blu-ray player, and I've had the PS3 in the past.

The PS3 was better, as you can imagine. I have had nothing but grief from the LG using Youtube after all updates in the past 6 months or so. I have my computer wired into my TV via HDMI anyway, so I just use that.

No, I can't imagine. I didn't get the PS3 because I don't play games and the Youtube function is something I use more than the Blu Ray function on my LG player. Still I'm thinking that the newer players, either LG or Samsung, have more smart functions.

Samsung Blu Ray players get high ratings but I got the BD-390 because of the cnet.com rating. It seems all brands of Blu Ray players have drawbacks: LG's being slow loading time; Samsung's being occasional failure to work; Sony's being lack of smart functions AND bad upconversion of regular DVDs, etc.

Be careful about region codes. There are 3 regions. Some players are region specific as well as some discs. Europe and Korea do not belong in the same. Yet another reason to just download, oops, I meant "steal."

The strange thing is, my friend bought a Denon all-region Blu Ray player. One regular firmware he downloaded locked his player to region A. Oh well.

That bites (although I've never heard of a blu-ray player that was supposed to be region-free legally).

It's only a big issue if you're not from the USA or Canada. It must suck for people from the UK.

The PS3 was fast, but I think, if you want to get nitpicky, some of the stand-alones have better image quality. We're splitting hairs, though. Sound quality goes to the PS3, though. I was surprised there would be any difference, actually. All-in-all, unless one has a really great system, it's really not that important which one you get.

I have also wondered about getting a Samsung player. I shyed away from getting one when I got my LG, because around that time, Samsung had a bad reputation for providing on-time player updates. LG was said to be quicker. I've been a bit disgusted with LG updates, though. I have discs that will run fine, then after an update, won't work properly. I have also learned not to leave the player on in pause mode for a long time, then come back, as the video quits working properly (it splits into several off-center lines). A reboot fixes the issue.

A few good Blu Ray players are not even sold in Korea, like Panasonic. I have a Samsung plasma I bought two years ago and the new LED TVs have a host of smart functions but I won't upgrade to LED since plasma has more lifelike colors and such.

I hope LG sends a firmware update that makes its Blu Ray players have the same menu as its new smart TVs
