There is a clear line here between children and adults.
Everyone here seems to get that.
All I will say (again) concerning adult students is that as a Teacher you need to be careful when you add them to FB. If it is when you are no longer teaching them then no problem. However, while they are in your class, not a great idea unless you create a FB group for all your class.
There is also a big, big difference between adult students at a Hakwon and University students. The University, may not look to kindly on teachers being FB friends with their students while they teach them, unless again it is part of a FB group dedicated to the class. |

I signed up for Facebook only 6 months ago, after intense peer pressure.
I'ts pretty much exactly what I thought it would be--silly, mundane, drivel.
I barely even look at it anymore. Giving students my facebook info won 't be an issue for me! |

Me thinks that you have not taught University students. They could care less what is on my facebook account. I have more than 300 pictures some are funny. None are too outrageous. I have tagged some that are a little iffy in the past but that is fine.
The benefits of friending uni students in my opinion far outweighs the downsides. You get to share in community with them outside of class. They can contact you without using your phone. You can see their pictures and their friends too. It is great.
You see University students are adults. And they are not likely to go to anyone at university to complain about what it on the teacher's facebook. They could care less. They are too busy studying and trying to get into eachothers pants and drinking to care one bit about the teacher they see once or twice per week. The students have a good time.
High School students on the other hand. Should not be your friends. You are asking for trouble there my friend. |

| Thing in my case is that my boss is on my facebook as my friend. In my last job he was aswell. I see that as a good thing. Stops you going overboard. |

I've taught adult Korean immigrants at a university in the US in their ESL department and I know that come course survey time, they can be quite vindictive if you don't pass them.
I've heard the same thing is common practice here at many universities. (maybe not yours though)
Odds are, nothing will happen. But there is that chance. And to me, the benefit of sharing my personal facebook with adult students is not worth it. And I don't even do anything really questionable. Friending kids on facebook is totally out of the question. |

I made an alias account last week for this very purpose..... I didn't go the full hog with the over the top teacher them but now I am thinking I may as well.
I only have one student and a couple of co workers on my normal facebook account and set up a special privacy setting for them but I don't really trust facebook to protect my privacy. In the past they have had a few changes that involved opting in and such that would leave you exposed.
I don't really have anything embarassing on there but the potential is high because my friends are well....not teachers |
