So, today I heard from my coteacher and a friend also heard from her coteacher that Gepik is cutting all elementary school teachers. No renewals, no rehires. Also, positions funded by city halls are also being cut, different from not long ago when we were told city hall positions are safe.

Again, probably just rumors.

This is good news. It means they will run the cycle of trying to teach English without us, then they will realize the students need native speakers.

Not getting annoyed at you (I share things I hear too) but how would GEPIK have a say in how cities decide to spend their money? I thought that GEPIK's only job was to help recruit and place teachers.

Anyway a former co-teacher of mine is hiring a new teacher for the Spring 2012 semester (she asked for my help in selecting from a group of candidates) so maybe these moratorium is for all elementary teachers for Fall 2012?

I should add though that I have some Korean friends who are interns (i.e. help with math, science, music) and they've all been told that there is no budget for interns next year so this elementary school announcement isnt totally impossible.

Teachers are accepted and hired sometimes fired by individual schools or the county not EPIK or GEPIK. The district or county decides whether or not it is going to provide funds for a school to have a Native English Teacher.

EPIK and GEPIK are just middlemen sitting in their Ivory Towers, that's why I wish the Korean school systems would get rid of them.

I wasn't saying gepik was making the calls on cutting city hall positions. City halls could possibly be having problems with funding too, therefore, cutting positions.

Where my friend works, a meeting for all English teachers in her city was held by their office of ed and they were told positions funded by Gyeonggi Do will be cut and positions funded by their city hall could not be guaranteed.

Again, just what I heard.

Sorry, if this question is off topic or just not relevant but here goes.

If you have a SMOE contract with a public school which is only half way completed in March 2012, what are your odds of being hacked out of the budget by your local school then?

Has anyone heard of someone getting dumped mid-contract?

Could possibly be true. Although in my experience 6 month time period from smelling the smoke to seeing the actual fire. On the other hand since its coming to budget time its possible the authorities are trying to gauge reaction to possible cuts. So just coul

Why only elementary schools? because is the biggest number?

I think schools will still be able to hire NETs with or without GEPIK. If they have their own individual budget they can do what they want with it.

Furthermore, I don't think that Gyeonngi Province has the authority to tell each individual city how to spend their city funding. If it is province funding, that is one thing, but they have no control over city funding. (to my understanding)

Its gone and it ain't coming back.

Public schools experimented with FT's for a few years, that experiment failed to live up to expectations.

They will do a poorer job without us...but they won't realise the difference.

Your post couldn't be sadder or truer I'm afraid. A post I won't forget from someone on this board a few months ago was something to the effect of "why not get the same bad results for less money?".

I'm in elementary school and all the co-teachers want me to do is mimic their planning and way of teaching. What's the point? Hire people from overseas because something's not working and then have them copy what's not working.

But, as you say, who's the wiser?

I should add that there seem to be more and more articles on rising unemployment among male university grads in SK. I'm not saying English is going to disappear overnight but there is a bigger picture to our slice of the employment market here.

I wonder if American teachers in rural areas will be rehired due to the FTA? Farmers are pissed!! Protests are starting everywhere!

I called GEPIK and asked and they denied this rumor.

It's always better to be cautious though.
