| I was a hard sell on the smart phone too, but it's definitely worth it for the ability to bank online, use google translate, check my email and just browse the web anywhere. When my phone was just a phone I hardly used it anyway. I'm paying three times as much as I was, but I'm getting infinitely more use out of it. |

I guess the majority use iphones, but I know people who use pretty much everything: HTC, samsung galaxy s2, LG's whatever it is with the 3d camera.
I guess I'm still debating cause it's so much more expensive than what I'm paying now. Like Schwa, I pay about 20,000 won a month right now, but it seems people are mostly really happy with their smart phones and it would be useful.
Thanks for the information everyone has given so far! I will look into getting one. |
Yeah get an iphone...it's perfect for people like you. |

This was once true, but not anymore. I'm not geeky or a power user of any kind, and my HTC has added immense productivity to my life--its native Google docs/Google calendar/G+/GoogleTalk alone have made it worth the money in only a few months. Add Instapaper, Evernote, and Kakao Talk, and I'm all set. |

Mind explaining? iphones don't seem less expensive to buy or use than the other phones, so I guess it's not based on price. But you give no reasons why.
I am actually leaning towards either HTC or Galaxy S2 because of better keypad input choices, especially for Korean. With iphone it seems you are stuck with the full keyboard option and that's it, right (siri aside)? |

Go with what you want. Iphone 4's can be had at very reasonable prices. The Iphone 4 is still a great phone.
Or, if you prefer the Galaxy S2, go with that. Both Andoird or Iphone will do exactly the same thing. |

HTC Sense is a far better interface than Galaxy's. They've been at it longer and have Android down like a champion clown. |

Question: Which company's GS2 is better for someone going back to the states in a couple of years? Basically which one is more compatible (KT or SK)? I plan on signing up with either Verizon or AT&T (very remote chance with Sprint).
Also, how easy is it to tether a laptop to the GS2 LTE? Any extra charge (in Korea)?
I ask these questions as a smartphone virgin and I know very little about phone technology standards. |

LG = Verizon, KT = AT&T. SK is proprietary SMS system so don't recommend.
LTE is not unlimited data like 3G. if you're gonna tether, prepare to let your wallet *beep* around for awhile first to scrounge up the serious bling it'll cost ya. assuming you want to do that. tethering is super easy though, like 5 button presses from home screen to on. no charge other than the STUPID overage rates jajaja |

I have the same phone and I agree that it's default Samsung settings are awful. I had to install the Tegrak lag fix to make it useable. Since then, it has been great. |

Apple = Mainstream. I'd recommend this to my mother, it's a safe bet for people who just like things to work.
Android = phones for people who dislike Apple for whatever reason. If you're the type who's not scared to use a partition manager on your main computer without making a backup first, this is the range of phones that you want to go for.
Samsung = the trendy Elite, but you have to accept that you need to make severe changes first before the phone is "ready", and you'll have to deal with KIES which makes iTunes seem to be user friendly. In short, you have to exorcise the Korean software spirits before the phone becomes acceptable for a Western mind. If you can say things like "After I got that POS KIES to finally update my Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich I had a hard time getting Odin to flush my Tegrak back, I was so scared I couldn't get Root and would have to to work without the ONENAND lagifx!" without a stutter, go for it!
HTC = I love their phones and I love how they support several OS including Android and WinMo.
For a first time smartphone user I'd recommend Apple. The 3Gs or 4G have very good price/performance ratios now. Then re-evaluate after 1-2 years. |
