So after a couple of years of good service my samsung laptop is on its last legs in many ways.

I am looking into a new computer (aiming towards a 13")

my shortlist is

macbook air
sony vaio
asus netbooks (cheap)

anyone have any experiences with these machines? Never owned a Mac but I used them at University

Asus and, to be honest, far and away if you are choosing from those three. Far and away the best bang for your buck.

Sony makes a solid PC, but it costs about 25% more than it should.

Totally forget about the Air. They are silly expensive for the components that are included and they have all kinds of problems with overheating.

The only thing about the Asus is the trackpad and screen issues.

Do you think the Samsung series 9 is any cop? seems the same specs as the macbook air but more expensive! im weary of Samsung laptops after this computer...

I'm a Mac fan (not a fanboy) and I love my Macbook Pro but I would say stay away from the Air as it's really pricey.

In fact I'm pretty sure the quality of Macs has declined over the past few years as they seem to be having more and more issue (faulty DVD drives, logic board problems, graphics card issues) and Apple almost NEVER admits to the problem.

Check out this page for reviews of some laptops you might be interested in.

I'm especially taken by the ASUS Zenbook UX31E.........

Build quality is excellent and only two things stop this from being a true MacBook Air killer: one is the display contrast ratio, and the other is the shallow key travel. Even so, its $200 cheaper than the MBA13 and matches or exceeds the Apple offering in just about every other area.

Cheers I will take it all on board!

Can anyone elaborate on why they think the Macbook air is overpriced? there seems to be not much competition for the price and portability...

Yeah, I think the Macbooks, especially used ones, are very fairly priced. You can upgrade the hard drive and memory and it would still consititute being a good deal.

Asus is a quality manufacturer. And price per performance really good. Also bear in mind their after service is second to none. Any fault they fix no questions asked. Got to give them props for that.

if you plan on doing any kind of traveling with your laptop, go with the netbook. if you plan on using your laptop mostly in your apartment then go with the vaio (i'd personally would go with whatever brand i could get the most bang for my buck though).
