My guess and this is only a guess is that things will open up eventually. The son is more western. Logically he knows that they can't continue as isolationist as they have been.
I have a feeling we'll see more reforms, etc.
War won't happen. Very very little chance. If war was going to happen it would have happened long ago. The generals know that if war happens they lose and they lose their power. They've seen regime change, Arab Spring and they know they can not win. China won't support as they did decades ago. The last thing China wants is an American military fighting on or near its border.
In time things will open up. Its only a guess but I think it will happen. |
With the extreme power the boy could be tempted with, in addition to that no one around him he can honestly trust (they aren't improving the welfare of the state) I doubt there will be any change, even small. |
This is what they said about Assad in Syria, oh he's more western than his dad... |

The talk about Kim III being western-educated (and therefore more western) is kind of funny. We don't even know how old he is. If he was western-educated, wouldn't at least *one* former classmate or teacher remember him? So at best, even if he was western-educated, he was a weird reclusive Asian kid. |

I can't verify the authenticity of the article but....

It says he went by another name. |

sounds like a recipe for disaster.
geeky, spoiled asian boy with massive sense of entitlement has uncomfortable brush with west.
A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing. |

Well if geeky, spoiled kids with massive senses of entitlement coming into contact with other cultures are any indication, North Korea should turn into an internet ranting place...
Daum and Naver should have a field day...
Oh and by the way, if you are from a powerful, governmental family, its generally best to keep a low profile...
Or else you are a booze soaked, lascivious playboy who craves attention.
Get a clue of how to behave if you come from a family with enormous power and lethal enemies....
Who knows though. Hal partied with Falstaff and the gang before saying "I know thee not, old man." |

Let's switch gears here for a minute. I'm curious about how some of you have seen the locals reacting. When I got to work, about an hour after the news broke, none of my Korean coworkers heard anything about it. There was about 30 seconds of "omg, really? hul." and everyone went back to work. Almost none of my students even brought it up, and I teach mostly middle school kids. Sure they're aware, but it's as if they don't care. If there was ever any doubt, this proves it. The under 40 crowd absolutely doesn't care anything about their northern brothers or have desire whatsoever to unify the peninsula.
Local news has had kind of a weird take on things. I can't translate everything they say, but there's almost a sense of grief about it. They keep showing montages of him smiling and laughing and playing sad music with every photo in a kind of soft focus. Like, they're sad he's dead.
Now, I'm not saying I've heard this from anyone, but I can see how some ubber nationalist might think it. Could they actually be reserved about this because, after all, he was Korean? So, despite the evil he's done, the threats he's made to the South, the starvation and torture of his own Korean people, could the locals really be thinking "well, he was still Korean, so we can't be happy about this."
And I just know, we're going to be hearing from some pantywaist hippie scolding us for being happy one of the worst people on Earth has finally done us a favor and died. I'm not saying death is something to be celebrated, but when sick, evil people like Osama bin Laden and Kim Jung Ill die, it's a good thing. It's a very good thing and yes, I'm happy about it. |

Why did it take almost 48 hours for the news to break? Surely SK/US has intelligence reports about this prior to the news channels picking it up. That kind of worries me. Doesn't anyone know what the heck is going on in that country? |
