yay - i'm getting an air conditioner next week...

the first summer here no a/c - I disliked it intensely
last summer i had an a/c - yea baby!
this summer i don't have 1 as yet and was looking where i could get a used 1.

today my landlord came up and explained he will be buying air conditioners for all the officetels in the complex..

i'm in suncheon.. deep south and i'm in a gully type place surrounded by mountains... i'm betting it get pretty darn sticky here

Everyone should make sure a/c is in his or her contract.

i have turned down plenty of jobs cuz they wouldn't entertain the idea of suppling an air conditioner....

not this 1..

i figured i'd just buy 1 went the time came.. maybe try to go 1/2's with the owner.. but i didnt get the chance.. he is giving 1 for free.. not my school, the owner of the officetel.

I really lucked out with my current contract--in the housing department anyway. My apartment was only about 6 months old when I moved in and the only previous occupant was the midnight runner I replaced. It's tiny, but I have A/C and a washer/dryer.

The apartment I move into in July may or may not have one. If not, the owners of the school will pay 1/2 for one. Not the best deal in the world, but the job itself makes up for it. It's a foreign school... no more hagwon hell for me!!

I lasted two summers without one. Now I'm in a brand new officetel with all the frills. I was giddy the day they installed the air conditioning. No more lame fans for me!

bought one at the Yongsan used furniture store, 2003 whisen that looks like a fridge cost us 740,000 won installed. No way our univ would provide us with one (heck they only gave us a bed, fridge, range and washing machine). tested it out and it runs fine

I'd suggest going there if you want a used one as they speak english there and will arrange delivery and installation

and yes you do need one especially in Seoul with the heat island effect. this place makes Houston look like Phoenix in terms of humidity absolutely miserable

My first year here, living in the countryside, no a/c. Three main problems. 1. the heat 2. the mosquitos from the open window 3. the noise of the cycaidas....those kept me awake

I have one. I wasn't sure if my apartment was going to come with one. I'm not sure how much they cost here but I would have bought one with my own money. I'll happily drop $500 to stay sane in Korean summer. I'm sure a lot of people who come here are fresh graduates and in debt up the wazooh for student loans. I'm one of those "ah after 14 years in the high paid software industry, I'm taking a wee sabbatical" types. It's nice that my salary covers the bills and lets me save a bit of money but I'm pretty pat and would think nothing of buying my own.

I've turned mine on a couple times and it seems to work okay. I'm pretty skeptical about the quality of Korean air-conditioning. I've been here a couple times as a tourist and stayed in some super deluxe hotels (Shilla, Walker Hill, Amiga, Koreana, Lotte Word) and their a/c has always s_ucked. You'd think for $250 a night you could get an a/c that keeps your room cool. Then again, it's not like its been 35c and 100% humidity.

The next hurdle is "will it actually last the summer?" So called Korean durable goods seem to all break down after 3 months.

There is only maybe 10 days of the year you really need one. Fan is sufficient and saves on power.

Come on Wylde, where you are from in Australia this is nothing in summer.

Reasons for having an air conditioner:

1) We don't have to stay awake nights worrying about fan death.

2) There won't be any mold growing in the back of the closet during the rainy season. Last summer my neighbor was gone for a month. When he returned, his whole apartment was covered in fuzzy black mold.

3) We can complain about having to turn down the air con because it's too cold.
