Guys I had some basic questions about the TESOL and CELTA courses.

In terms of my goals I am starting to think about other countries, particularly Asian countries (such as Hong Kong, Malaysia etc) but Korea is still firmly in my mind now. Ill be returning to SMOE next spring. I am TOPIK level 3 in Korean with about three years' public school experience to date.

Questions
1/ I understand that there are different variations of the TESOL including the Trinity TESOL and SIT TESOL certificates. What are the main differences? What is the minimum amount of hours I should aim for? (Tompatz said on another thread 120 is the minimum).

2/ Is there a lot of variation in CELTA courses as well or are they all pretty much the same?

3/ Am I right in asserting that a CELTA has to be done in-house at an affiliated institute but a TESOL can be done online / over long distance?

Also, what prices (roughly) would I be looking at??

Lastly, if you have anymore information that you think is important about either of the two courses then please frie away.

The CELTA, SIT and Trinity cert TESOL are equivalent and treated as such globally (their reputations are firmly planted). This is NOT always true of other TESOL/TEFL/TESL certs.

The STANDARD for general acceptance is 120 hours with a minimum of 6 hours of observed practicum with real students (not peers on the course).
Most reputable employers in the industry ignore the 20/40/60 hour courses offered by places like "Oxford Seminars".

The CELTA courses are standardized globally (one of the reasons for their wide acceptance) and quality assurance is done on every program by Cambridge.

CELTA now offers a combination course (part on-line and completion in the classroom). Check the website for particulars and locations.

Prices vary a bit but in most countries in SE Asia you can get a CELTA for about 1300 GBP (2100 USD) and that often includes room and board during the course http://www.ihbangkok.com/page/39-international_house_bangkok_prestigious_english_school_in_bangkok_celta_delta_thailand.html

The basic CELTA (in house) without the board option is $1600.

If you are in Korea, the British Council offers the CELTA here as well.

Thanks a lot Tompatz, awesome information as ever!

I understand that the CELTA has to be done in-house because observation of classes is part of the assessment (unless im mistaken).

But if I do either the Trinity or SIT TESOL online will it still be valid or will I have to do that at an accredited institute as well?

CELTA now offers a part-time program where you do the coursework by distance learning / on-line and then attend in-house for your observation, critique and evaluation.

The other 2, to the best of my knowledge, are still completely in-house but that may change in the near future (keeping up with the Jonses (or Cambridge as the case may be)).

So basically what you are saying is that the Trinity and SIT TESOL are done in-house but more inferior TESOL certificates are done online?

In regards to CELTA and TESOL, and without oversimplifying things or generalising too much, what's your opinion of online variants of these qualifications / certificates?
