| All this because of one inquiry about Korea's night life (one of the best aspects of the country these days)? |
I think we're making the point that it's not just the geographic location that's important in Korea, and that it's not famous for nightlife. I mean otherwise, it's gonna be a pretty boring list of responses wouldn't you say:
Seoul; Seoul; Seoul; Busan; Seoul; Seoul; Bundang; Seoul; Ilsan; Seoul; Seoul. It's a thread about nightlife in Korea. This is not Buenos Aires, Berlin, Munich, Amsterdam, or Vancouver. What did you think would happen?
But you make a fair point. I should at least pick a geographic location for nightlife for a young teacher: Busan, then Seoul. |

For a young teacher who likes the city and is interested in night life (not so much western bars/clubs) as well as culture, what areas do you recommend?
I know it's very open ended and up to opinion, but I wanted to see if there are any places or principles that come up more than once. |
Bangkok, Tokyo, Taipai, Shanghai, ....., Seoul.
If you mean, "Where is a good place to WORK?" rather than continue your college lifestyle then Seoul, Suwon, Busan, Incheon... anyone who will hire you. It is only 4 hours from anywhere in the country to anywhere else in the country so you are never far from the "nightlife".
With all the problems that are endemic in the EFL industry in Korea you should focus more on getting a good job with a decent employer than your night life or you will soon be back here with a thread titled, "HELP - my boss is screwing me" and you will have never even seen the bright lights before you need to tuck tail and move onward.

Seoul.
accept no substitute, except perhaps one of the CLOSE satellite cities. (Anyang, Ilsan, Bundang, etc)
4 hours to nightlife is too far. Even 2 hours to nightlife is too far.
Consider what you'd have to do if you wanted to go out on a weekend night in Seoul. Subway closes at 1 am, you'll be coming home after that time.
want to wait until subway opens up at almost 6 am? and then sit on it for several hours until you get home at say 8 am? how will your Sunday and Monday be?
find a buddy with a place in Seoul where you can crash if need be, or live in Seoul yourself. Anything else will suck. Trust me.
Busan can work, but only in or very close to Heundae |

I don't see why people on this forum get offensive, the op just wants a decent nightlife. Is there anything wrong with that?
Sorry he is not a loner or just in it for the money. Most people who teach in the country or even the smaller cities do fall into those categories. I almost forgot about the couples, who would never dream of coming to Korea if they did not have the partner with them.
Its not a zero sum game either, there are bad jobs outside of Seoul and good jobs in Seoul. Just do your homework. |

such people are simply being sanctimonious d-bags. There's nothing wrong with desiring to have cool places to go to on the weekend, if and when one feels like it. It has absolutely nothing to do with the kind of job one does during the week. I'd cut off my left testicle to be within a short, reasonable distance of the Seoul nightlife areas. |

I don't necessarily think that "being sanctimonious d-bags" applies.
I do however think that using nightlife as a criteria for locating a job in Korea is asking for a bucket load of problems.
There are other criteria that are far more important (and I couldn't care less about their job performance) but a one hour commute or a night in a yeogwan / jimjilbang is far less of a problem for some young buck than getting stuck with a crap hagwan nightmare and spending / losing millions of won to fix it (move, run, labor fight, etc).
If he is seriously into the nightlife, go to Tokyo or BKK. They both beat the he11 out of Seoul for bright lights and things to do (nicer weather too).

It really depends what you mean by nightlife. Really, there's nothing that Tokyo has to offer that Seoul doesn't on an English teacher's salary.
If you're just looking for late night life..stores, restaurants, a couple of Western-style pick up joints where you can chase skirt and get drunk, most cities in Korea offer that, certainly any city over a million people. Seoul, however, is the only city that offers any variety, and probably the only city in Korea you could be an anonymous barfly. |

please understand. I agree with you on that fundamental level. If nightlife is the OP's primary concern, then Korea isn't anywhere near the top of best Asian options, much less global ones. In fact, IMHO the nightlife sucks here. Compared to say say BKK or Jakarta, it's downright laughable.
However, it's entirely possible the OP is coming to Korea for other reasons, let's say a combination of monetary and an actual desire to teach with professionalism and integrity. Under such circumstances, asking for the "best" nightlife place to live and teach in a coungtry that basically sucks for nightlife, should not be attacked outright. |

Well said. Never thought about that before but it is very very true. |
