| I'd say that the viewing distance in rooms with TVs is about 8-10 feet. Based on those optimal viewing distance charts, I started by getting a 55" TV. I found it horribly tiny and so for my next TV I went to a 65" screen. Looking at it, it too looks horribly small. Now I'm thinking I should just jump straight to 80". However, according to those charts, I am sitting way too close for that. Am I doing something wrong? Are my eyes crap? |

You actually paid for a 65'' TV??
In the Home Theater world it's generally considered pointless to go bigger than 50''.......that's when you get a projector! 150'' will satisfy you. And cost a lot less than a 65'' TV.
If you're worried about daytime viewing then you can either, draw the curtains, or buy an affordable LCD TV which could be mounted on the wall so that the screen can come down over it at night. |

you think a 80" LCD is going to be to small?
move your sofa closer to the screen. 80" is huge bro.
65" is big enough too.
I have a 50, I think it's small now, but I am sure a 65 will be better.
A 80" OMG. come on man.. 80 is huge. and the envy of anyone you bring over to watch it.
but yeah, time to go full projector. 4 grand will set you up with a remote controlled screen which will drop down from the roof, a projector and a small home theater sound system. 150" and you can still keep your 65" on the wall and when you want to watch a movie you bring down the screen.

I invested pretty heavily into BR 3d with several players, 12 pairs of glasses, and a bunch of discs:

A projector just doesn't look as good. The 65" I got is the Panasonic 65VT30, which CNET reviewed as "Superb all-around picture quality, anchored by the deepest plasma black levels of the year, make the Panasonic TC-PVT30 series the best-performing TV we've tested in 2011."
The problem is, it's just too small. For comparision's sake, here is the space I'm talking about. I bought two 65" TVs and put them side-by-side to show how one just looks so small in that space:

I've added 2NE1 and a Korean Barbie doll to prevent nitwits from claiming I found these pics on the interwebs.
I actually find myself sitting four feet in front of those screens and not seeing anything wrong with it. I guess I'll live with the 65"s and wait for CES to see if they are coming out with a more premium 80" model. The current Sharp 80" is a bit ghetto. As long as it's under $10,000, I don't mind the price. I'm more concerned with overall size and picture quality. My biggest problem is that there is no showroom to actually look at the larger, more expensive models, so I can't tell if it's going to be big enough. |

You bought two TVs and you put them on the floor?
They don't look small in that space...that space looks really small with two large tvs crammed into it...and on the floor no less.
With the down angle camera optical illusion view...the space seems even smaller.
Why not wall mount it...or get some furniture?
And where is the surround sound stereo to go with it?
Something is amiss with this post... and picture.
I think this must be a troll...hard to believe someone would set up a tv there like that and think others would ooh and ahh over it. |

1. They are pretty heavy. So they are not easy to move.
2. We were going to wall mount, until we saw how small it was. So there was no point in buying a stand or mounting since it's not going to be there for long. It's simply a temporary solution.
3. I've got some pretty nice Martin Logan speakers to go in that area sitting in the garage. But again, it's pointless until we have something that really belongs there.
4. Friend pointed out how cool it would be to have a second 65" side-by-side for video gaming. So we tried it out.
5. I suppose the pics don't show just how small one 65" is given how you could fit two of them in there. First thing we all thought was how small it looked.
6. Only posted pics to prove I wasn't BSing about having bought these TVs. |

From this site, it appears you want the THX recommended seating distance for "immersion." For a 65" TV, multiply by 1.2 and you get 78 inches, or 6.5 feet. So, yeah, if you're sitting 8 or 10 feet away, it's going to seem small.
I'm not sure I could handle that, personally, but it honestly seems as if that's what your problem is. That, and possibly having a giant empty space behind the TV making it seem smaller. |

The Epson projectors in the 2 million + range are just gorgeous. I was absolutely amazed by the picture. I like Panasonics too, but last I looked, Panasonic found the Korean landscape too anti-foreign to sell much here competitively.
FYI, for anyone interested in a flatscreen, there will be quite a few come up for sale in Jan/Feb, as many NETs start to bail after non-renewal. |
