Everyone buckle up for my latest tale of woe.

I'm leaving Korea soon so I need to pay off all my bills, close my accounts, cash out my pension, etc etc. This has mostly gone smoothly but SK has given me enough trouble for everything put together.

I got my "korean friend" (assistant) to call on Friday to cancel it. They refused to cancel it because they had to speak to me. Well, ok, I'm right here so give me the phone. Oh no, no no no, no English. Ummm. Okay? You have to wait an hour. Being busy as hell in this last week in Korea, I had no time to sit around and wait for a call that I suspected might not even come.

Tried again on Monday. This time they made an appointment for Tuesday. Ugh. They did call, but you have to pay for the extra days. No way. Okay, fine, but you have to pay the bill today... wtf? The last bill came out of the account on the 23rd so I thought I was done but that was the bill for Nov. I already closed the account, primarily because I don't want the unsettlingly incompetent SK corporation having access to my money, but the Customer Service Rep gave me a bank account number to transfer money and told me it had to be today.

This is where it gets infuriatingly stupid.

I went to the bank (KEB) to pay the bill at the ATM. It didn't work. I went into the bank and saw a teller. It didn't work. They sent me to the bank where the account was at. (KB) It worked! I left and paused in the lobby to check my list o' stuff I must do. The teller came running out to get me because the account had vomited my money back up. What.

I was passed off to a different teller, a lovely woman who spoke good English. After another 30 minutes or so she found the problem - I can't pay the bill until the due date, which is Jan 21. Uh. UHHHH?? Words (at least the ones that are suitable for a serious business website such as this) fail.

So I wasted over two hours on this and the bill is still not paid. The best suggestion I got was to give money to a friend and have them pay the bill after Jan 21. How professional! Thanks, SK!! I love the idea of bothering my friends with your breathtaking inability to function!

Mad Mad Mad Mad

Also the service was shit and my internet has been cutting out for months. I never called because I just knew it would be a giant pain in the ass to even try, and they probably wouldn't fix it anyway. Suspicions confirmed? Rolling Eyes

Current plan is to try and get the account registered with my internet banking and pay it with that, but if it doesn't work I think I've put more than enough effort in with this nonsense.

Mad. So mad.

Yeah SK needs to up their game. When I signed up I filled out the application form for automatic payments. Fast forward 3 months, they cut off my internet for not paying bills. The kicker is that they never sent me any bills nor contacted me to tell me there is a problem.

The entire group - not just Telecom - is one of the worst examples of Korean Chaebol born out of nepotism and corruption, yet thriving commercially since they took positions in oligopolistic sectors with low demand elasticity.
No wonder their CEO/President was found guilty yet barely escaped jail time a few years ago, and is about to be charged with embezzlement, again.

Y'know, if they're being douches and you're leaving anyways, I'm somewhat tempted to tell you to just stick them with the final bill.

This is what I thought. Are you coming back? If not, screw them.

You might be the type to not care about unpaid bills in countries you hope to never return to, but I'm not. Razz I used the service, lousy as it was, and I'd prefer to pay. It really shouldn't be this hard.

Be sure to give it a try then let us know if the account accepts your money or not.

Almost as bad as the type of poster that always complains about this forum...yet continues to return.

The OP is trying to deal with a seemingly inept customer service area.... I see it as a pretty legitimate post.

Exact same thing happened to my friend. His internet was cut off so he asked me if I could call the company for him. The guy on the other line said my friend didn't pay and my friend said he never got a bill. Now he doesn't get internet for a week until he pays his bills. What's stranger is that his phone contract is with the same company and there hasn't been any problems with the automatic payments.

Huh. For some reason I suspect that if she had posted that she was going to get on the plane and to hell with SK considering their lousy service and inept billing, there would be no shortage of self-righteous moralizers lining up to lay down the lecture about the obligations of the foreigner to not ruin things for the rest of us by ignoring responsibilities when they become inconvenient. ['that's why we can't get credit cards!', etc etc].

I personally refused to allow KT/'olleh' to do automatic withdrawals for my Internet. And I'm trying to get them to at least change my cell phone draws to the beginning of the month and not the end.

Good for you. It's called ethics, people. Kant's categorical imperative, you know? Do what you can, at least. I hope it works eventually, and three cheers for your last week in this place Surprised
