|
|
I've used both Astrill VPN and Strong VPN in recent months. Strong was the best for Netflix stuff, but as soon as I tried to use utorrent... BOOM ... within one day I received a DCMA notification warning for filesharing.
I thought it would be like other VPNs and "protect" my identity, but after reading other reviews, I have learned that this is not the case. Although they advertise anon. filesharing, it's really not. Apparently they log everything, and will turn you in if you continue to share. Sounds like almost all stateside VPN services are the same.
Anyone know of an alternative? |

Only turn it on for the times you need it, disconnect it otherwise?
Join a private torrent tracker, don't use TPB. |

You mean Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) ?
The Digital Millennium Copyright Act is a United States copyright law
Feel free to ignore it. You are out of their jurisdiction.
The worst that would happen is that you would lose your VPN subscription.

I paid with a credit card from the USA, though. And Strong VPN said they would "just give [me] a warning this time."
After some research on the web, it appears that Strong VPN works very well for netflix, but has a lot of negative press because they give up your IP information if you receive the notice I mentioned above. |

Unless something has changed the US cannot extra judicially charge you (a US citizen) with a crime of this nature when the offense is not committed on US soil.
The worst that can happen is you lose your VPN subscription.
It is NOT like the local sheriff is going to just pop over to Korea to issue a summons to (a US) court and it is not an extraditable offense. US law does NOT apply in Korea.
All bluster and no balls (sort of like a hagwan owner threatening to blacklist someone for quitting and then they will have immigration ban them forever).
And to answer the original question, don't use a VPN for your downloading torrents. It isn't necessary.

| Ttomp, SK blocks torrents from outside of Korea unless I use a VPN. |

| Sounds like you should change your internet provider. I've used C&M, KT (QOOK) and LGU+. They never blocked non of my torrents. |

Oh, I agree, but somehow having it lowers the phone bill for someone in our family. |

| I downloaded a movie through my Strong VPN and received a threat (actually, they turned off my service and told me to call them to get it back on) I did this and said I'll make sure to use my local internet for torrents from now on. Also, I find torrents faster to download on Korean internet than through my Cal-based VPN. |
