I had some friends living in Japan and from what they gathered the 'man' in such 'relationships' was commonly referred to as the 'sponsor'. Shocked
Just another wacky mis-translation?

Yeah, I think they have all these caveats for teen-adult sex. Like, if you're in any sort of position that can be defined as authority over the teenager, sexual relations are illegal. This would probably cover a good chunk of the situations in which an adult is likely to have extended contact with a minor.

For all those of you who are disgusted to think that Korea might have 13 as the age of consent, check out this news item from Canada:

Currently, the age of consent is 14 except in situations when a relationship of trust or authority exists, or the relationship is deemed exploitative, such as in child pornography or prostitution. In such situations, the age of consent is 18.

Disgusting bunch of pervs over there...

Upon further thought, I think the purpose of the wording is to allow for people under 18 to have sex with other people under the age of eighteen without it being criminal.

It is quite a grey area. Obviously a forty year old and a 17 year old would be forbidden. I'm not sure about 20 and 17. Probably not.

Actually this is close to the mark. I used to work with a victim assistance unit and "determination of consent" was always an odd thing. Basically the last few posters were right on the mark. One could not use "authority" over a minor to exploit them for sex.

An older law (not sure if still active) was that one party could not be more thna 3 years older than the other (while one was under 1Cool

Consensual sex between an adult and a minor over the age of 13 is almost never prosecuted in Canada. This includes cases where the adult is in a position of authority. We can philosophize til were blue in the face about what we all agree should be different, but a little legal research on the matter reveals a system indifferent to some pretty sick behavior.

I remember when I was in junior high, one of my teachers was having sexual relations with several grade 8 and 9 students who were on the girls basketball team. It went to court, and this sleazebag got off completely because the judge ruled all the girls had consented. The BC school board banned him from ever teaching in our province again, but the courts let him off with a clean record.

I have spent almost 10 years working for Canadian agencies that deal with at-risk youth, and I can honestly say that employers implement the only disciplinary measures dealt to people in position of trust, who engage in sexual relations with children. Offenders almost always get fired, but they almost never get charged.

not sure about your experiences but I worked with the victims assistance program in Calgary and they DID procecute many cases. Too many files rolled accross my desk in too short a time.
