They should have locked Hugh Jackman up for his performance, send him to Alcatraz where that kid in the secret government lab can take away his self-absorbing powers. |

I have always supported copyright laws. He knew the consequences of uploading that movie and he took the gamble.
Problem is that the odds are starting to tip against him and his like. The technology and manpower and resources AND legislation is stacking up against hackers so that producers of movies can finally take ownership of their property again. |

| Ironically, the movie probably received more press and publicity because it was leaked than if it hadn't. I didn't know about the movie until I read about the leak on CNN.com. One could argue that's it's the buzz created by this publicity that earned the movie 87 million dollars during its opening weekend. In comparison, the latest X-Men movie made 55 million dollars during its opening weekend. |

I don't believe in putting people in jail for downloading a movie.
Most of the people I know download something some time or another. However, they still buy many products. It doesn't mean a person is going to download everything. |

Yeah some random schmoe uploading a 700MB version of the movie shouldn't be doing time, that's nuts. A fine of a few grand or something.
Now if he was say a distributor and had privileged access then I could see the year in prison. That's kind alike embezzling from a bank as an employee or something like that. There's a much greater breech of trust involved. |
Well, not really. See the embezzellors all seem to be getting away with it in the good old U$ of A. |

1)Bootlegging movies is, and should be, a crime. Bootlegging a movie you had privileged access to is significantly worse. A street-bootlegger who's doing it as a business should get the couple of grand fine. Someone who has privileged access should face prison time. That's the equivalent of stealing trade secrets. That is a big deal.
2)Whether some people get away with embezzlement is irrelevant.
3)People don't get away much with embezzlement, even corporate big wigs. Daily you read headlines about some politico or business owner going down for fraud/tax evasion/embezzlement. Yes, many get away. Many do not. I know, I know, the narrative of the fat cats getting away with everything makes it easy for us to scapegoat our problems on them, but that doesn't excuse us. And yes, crony capitalism is a big problem these days, but that doesn't make it okay for everyone to join in the looting.
4)I have massive amounts of absolutely perfectly legal material on my computer and thus am surely not a major blowhard hypocrite. |
