|
|
This is an extension of a thread over at the Marmot, but it certainly merits discussion.
As many here are aware, the "Kid's react to..." series recently put K-pop up for reaction. The kids' reactions were terribly scripted (the series uses the same kids repeatedly) and not worth much in and of themseves (hasn't the "kids say the darndest things" run its course?), the netizens reactions were much more revealing for a broader discussion that may have more relevance and meaning for us.
The words "ugly kid" and "retarded-looking kid" were common rebuttals and this gem: "They don't know how awesome and popular kpop is" were far more revealing not only about those who feel the need to defend Kpop from children's comments, but as a reflection on Kpop itself. Heck, I get a kick out of the usernames of those who left comments; again, quite revealing.
I will refrain from further comment - though I have already shown my hand with my cherry-picking - and let the posters serve themselves up for praise/derision. The comments begin at the bottom of the linked page.

It's like a youtube page...
You could put up a Kids React to Lawrence Welk and you'd get some Lawrence Welk fan calling them idiots and whatever from behind the computer screen. |

It read like a typical thread at Aisafinest before they started moderating that site better. |

What makes you think the answers were scripted. I didn't feel that at all. |

Well, perhaps 'scripted' was a poor choice of words. Seeing as the kids they use for these videos (the whole series) are apparently quite experienced at this whole "kids react" thing, the responses are not completely spontaneous. They know they are being recorded and they know that the series is drawing attention. I think the makers need to find new kids for each segment; this would be a less 'practiced' or somehow influenced reaction. |

That saying this reflects on Kpop fans is partly true, but its also true that this reflects on internet video posting commentary in general.
Name your favorite genre of music, I'm pretty sure there's a video post out there that has degenerated into a childish flame war. Does that reflect on you as a fan of that genre?
Anyways, I don't know why the netizens are up in arms...If 4/10 people in America like Kpop that would be stunning. That's a success, not a failure. I think they're more upset that the negative kid seemed to be getting the star treatment and his view was "endorsed" by the producers. |

Ok. So start another thread about that.

Yes, and as an individual.

Yep, trust someone to ring in with the racism card. Whatever man....you are just part of the humor now. |

So if you are a say, a fan of Mahler, and there is a "Kids React to Mahler" video and on some thread some classical music fans start ranting about how the kids are retarded, one is ugly, etc. etc. That reflects on all classical music listeners?
That reflects on you who doesn't share their opinion?
That's just stupid.

I don't think it was racist. I do think the producers edited it to endorse a certain view. I think a few things some of the kids said, were cause for concern, but nothing realy nasty.
As I said, aside from the attempt to "frame the issue" K-Pop comes off rather well. 40-50% approval in a potential market of tens of millions. Those are pretty good numbers. The netizens shouldn't focus so much on what was bad, but rather on what was good. |

Indeed. I misread your post to a degree.
If the people defending Mahler were to post in the same manner as in the OP thread, then yes, it would spill back on to me in a limited way, as a fan. Much the same way as when a foreigner imports drugs, how that paints us all with that brush. Of course, one has more far-reaching consequences, but in the linked thread, I would be hesitant to say I enjoy Kpop with such childish supporters surrounding me. Then again, its all behind a pseudonym, right? I'm sure (I hope) if "kpopx3love" used their real name, they would be a bit less inclined to call an eight year-old "retarded" for being asked his opinion or "wandaful" re-thinking her desire to punch the children. Cherry-picking, but it's all there.
The point of the thread was to have a laugh at the humorous retorts from the Kpop supporters. You took it much too seriously, first defending the replies claiming them to be normal for this sort of thing (sure, no doubt), then bringing up the deeper intentions of the producers (whose primary motivation was surely to generate as many hits as possible to the thread) as featuring the negative (to which the implication is clear, until you consider my former plausible aside). Then on to Mahler, a situation where I believe the discussions would be just as lively, but probably in a more high-brow manner, given the topic. Again, one would think.
Look, it was just for fun. Relax and have a laugh. Put up a thread about any western dancing bozo if you like; goodness knows there are a wealth of them to target as well. |

You're missing the obvious, which is that the kids could have had a positive reaction to the the videos they were shown.
Either way, their reactions aren't all that surprising. Regardless of its Hallyu pretensions, K-pop is aimed first and foremost at a Korean audience.
It certainly didn't help that they didn't understand the lyrics, either. Who knows, had they understood the lyrics, they might have had a different reaction. |

What does the possibility that they could have had a positive reaction have to do with my post? I was commenting on their reactions in general; not positive or negative, just how they reacted. For me, the obvious could be found in, for example, your reading my post carefully enough to see that I missed nothing obvious at all.
Many did have positive reactions; does that change anything in my previous post? Not a thing. Be them positive or negative, I maintain that the reactions are not completely honest. |

Youtube comments make one lose faith in humanity.
But some K-pop fans, especially Korean or younger ones, have no idea how much of it is borrowed/stolen from other artists/genres, so they may view it as the end all, be all of pop music, because it's all they know.
And then they are shocked to find that other people don't feel the same about it because it sounds and looks like a cheap, childish ripoff to them. And then the fans/netizens get mad and go on the offensive against those who don't like it. Probably some ethnic pride sensitivity thing going on as well.
As for the kids on the video, the "What the hell is that??" looks on their faces were priceless. Living in Korea, we see K-pop all the time so we're immune to it, but for the uninitiated, it's a pretty hilarious genre.
I played a Wonder Girls video for my friend in San Diego, and he looked like he was going to vomit. He's pretty open minded musically and culturally and loves cuties as much as the next guy, but I thought he was going to throw his laptop or something. K-pop just has that effect on some people. He was literally speechless. I'm guessing he didn't want to say anything in front of my Korean girlfriend that was there. |

Read the rest of my comment. Think back to when you were a kid and you'll understand. |
