I am kind of tired of my pre-paid phone because I have to keep on buying minutes. I ended up just rarely using my phone, so I don't deal with having to charge it.

Yes, without issue.

Another 5 years in country and he'll be ready to go into the actual store, then the whole process will really get moving!

When I first came here, it was hard to get a plan. It wasn't as common to see Waygooks with plans. Now, it's pretty common. I'm going to look into it. I haven't been here for 5 years. It's 4 years in total, but I left for 2 years. I was looking for some information, and I wanted to get confirmation. Not everyone knows everything. One co-worker said you can only get 2 year plans. Another said you can get a one-year plan, and this includes someone who speaks more Korean probably than you and is married to a Korean and has been here since the late 90s.

I believe you could only get one year plans with Oz until a year or so ago, but I'm pretty sure they all offer them now.

Technically yes, it is possible to get a one year plan. You just have to know what to ask for.

Go to your local KT Global store and ask for "Shocking Sponsor Basic". those are 1 year plans.

Most smaller/independent stores won't offer that to you because they make more money by upselling the 2 year plans.

this is coming from someone who lives in Korea, is married to a Korean and even works in the Korean phone industry!

though I don't speak as much Korean as I should.

Okay, I will look into that. Thanks a bunch. I'll head into KT and check it out. Does LG do the same?

I got a one year plan from LG/OZ two years ago, so I'm sure you can now. That said, the previous poster is probably correct in saying you'd do better at a larger store.

OP - you can generally only get the two year plans if you're getting the nicer, more expensive phones (smart phones). If you do get one and it's only a one year plan, the cost will be higher. If you're just getting a cheap phone, then one years are no problem. If you want a smart phone, you'll be a bit more hard pressed to find one on a one year plan AND have it be a decent price.

Go to the Seoul Global Center (there are a bunch of locations) and you can get setup with a phone right there.

Yes and no.

With KT, the way I understand it...The discounts are a little different, but the phone ends up being about the same price overall, just paid within 12 months. It's been a few months since I went over the Shocking Sponsor plans, so my info might not be that good in regards to the price. Maybe if Chris could clarify that one a bit it would help out alot.

The problem with getting a two year plan to get a smart phone is I don't necessarily know if I'm going to be here for 2 more years, and I am the kind who likes to pay his bills. One friend told me to join the 21st century and get a smart phone, but if it means I have to get a 2 year plan or pay a crazy amount of money to have a phone for year, that might not be a good idea. I don't want to spend 500,000 won for example to have a phone.

What's the advantage of having those smart phones? I have a prepaid right now that I hardly use. I have people call me since I have prepaid or I text people. That's fairly typical for people with prepaid. I do know an LG store where this one guy speaks decent enough English.

Smart phone: games, interactive apps for the subway, ebooks, the internets etc. KaTalk. In other words, you will *beep* around on your phone more often. Oh, and my newest addiction - Scramble With Friends.

My boss went to SKT and bought me an iPhone 4 in early September 2011. I paid zero dollars that day. He said that I could only do a two year (but he himself went in thinking I could do a one), so I did.

My bill is 80,000 won per month for ??? minutes (maybe 400?), unlimited 3G and 1,000 text messages. Since everyone and their mom uses KaTalk, the only texts I ever get are spam. That 80,000 won also includes the breakdown of my phone cost. I was told that if I break it, I just pay back the leftover amount on the phone.

Overall, it's definitely a steal compared to the States. There, I paid 200 USD upfront for an iPhone and the bill itself was 115 USD a month with a limited amount of data (which, I use a shit ton of).

Oh and if you do have to go it alone, I'd imagine Olleh can also do any other phone setup in English-ee quite well at these stores.
