The US has defended comedian Jay Leno's right to free speech after India condemned a reference he made to the holiest Sikh shrine.
A Leno skit showed the Golden Temple of Amritsar as the summer home of Republican candidate Mitt Romney.
Mr Romney has faced questions over his wealth and many Sikhs are angry the temple has been depicted as a place for the rich.
The Sikh community has launched an online petition over the comment.
An Indian minister called Leno's comments "objectionable" and said "freedom does not mean hurting the sentiments of others".

Actually, that's exactly what freedom is. The ability to say what everyone agrees with is pretty meaningless.
I never watch the show, but that actually sounded pretty funny. |

The thing is Leno didn't even mention the Sikh religion as far as I could gather. He just showed the temple which looks very rich. He wasn't intending to insult the feelings of Sikhs. It wasn't done on purpose, so they should relax. |

Type "golden temple" into Google and that's what pops up. It's also the first usable photo you get if you type in "gold palace". I assume Leno's underlings do quick research the same way everyone else does. |

If comedy never offended anyone it would be pretty lame. |

The thing is 99% of the people who were watching that show had no idea what the Golden Palace was or about the Sikhs in general. And Leno made no mention. But they know now. And now those people view the Sikhs as another over-sensitive, crazed religion just as they see Islam. Congratulations to the whiny Sikh hierarchy. |

You can find such behavior amongst all faiths. I can understand people can be offended, but Jay Leno hadn't intended to offend anyone, and he didn't say anything insulting about the said edifice. I didn't think they needed to get all tied up in knots over this. I am all for respecting cultures and what not, but people need to not get worked up way too easily over any little thing. |

Ironically, you can also find the behavior he was mocking in almost all faiths. A picture of a small slice of the Vatican would have worked just as well, or of a striking and grandiose Mormon temple. |

Well, good luck to the Sikhs in forcing Jay Leno to retract his statement out of existence. If they can figure out a way to do that, maybe America can find a way to wipe Jay Leno's entire career from our collective consciousness. |
