I was asked in class if there is a way in English to express when someone asks something, and the listener mishears and answers incorrectly.

The Korean saying is that I ask in the East and the person answers in the West.

I am not very good at English sayings anymore.....

Say something irrelevant, give an irrelevant reply, answer a different question, avoid the answer, say nothing relevant...
this is hard, can't think of anything really good.

I just thought of this, but I'm not sure if it would quite fit, but sometimes we say someone is "way out in left field"........... or something like that.
