It bothers me because I think the workers actually believe it!

I always thought that the city slogans here were very cheesy. I live in "A+ Anyang"! But the worst of these have to be "Hi Seoul".

Here's a list of city slogans:

http://governmentofkorea.blogspot.com/2009/11/tourpia-korea-touring-culture-city-1-in.html

Highlights:

Goyang City: "The City of Green and Lake" (Just one lake?)
Suwon: "Happy Suwon." (is the Red Light District within Happy Suwon's borders?)
Busan: "Dynamic Busan"
Chungju: "Dynamic Chungju." (How do they know these cities are dynamic? Did they put them in a wind tunnel?)
Gunsan City: "Dream Hub Gunsan"
Nonsan: "A prosperous city with citizens" (Wow! Citizens? As in more than one?)
Cheonan City: "Cheonan, The World's Best City" (Whoever made this slogan obviously hasn't been to Cheonan)
Asan: "Smart Asan. Well-being City Asan" (Full of Well-being restaurants?)
Sangju: "Just Sangju" (Just Sangju, with that gas station with the dirty washroom)
Yangsan: "Active Yangsan! Nature! Tradition! Harmonizes today!" (Yangsan: ADHD! Let's ride bikes!)
Gunpo: "O2 Gunpo" (Citizens are not fish)
Yangju: "Welcome all Netizens" (Yangju.co.kr is better than real Yangju)
Uiwang: "Yes! Uiwang." (No! Just no.)
Uijeongbu: "Genial Public City, Vitality Economy City" (Almost thought it said Genital Pubic City)

The rest are pretty bad, too. It's almost like they gave some low ranking official the task of coming up with English city slogans in an afternoon and he did. Most of them don't reflect the character of the city at all.

Hilarious. Screams, err, yelps, of total insecurity. It really does seem like they gave some soju-infused dude this naming project, and gave him two hours to complete it. Disgraceful, ineffective, and embarrassing propaganda.

For an advanced country that wants to globalize culturally as it did economically, I can't fathom why they so lazily and haphazardly branded every city/place in the country with names no English speaker can look at without cringing.

Now I hear 2MB wants to start renaming government offices with English names instead of Korean names. I'm glad his term is up because from what I heard, he is essentially pushing for everything to be renamed in English.

This desire makes absolutely no sense to me. Why couldn't they ask just a few native speakers before spending millions of dollars on projects like these? Why were these city 'slogans', advertisements and so forth made so sloppily?

Did they ever even consider that foreigners and Koreans alike don't want the entire country to be in English? Most foreigners planning on spending a week or more in Korea learn it's simple alphabet. Hell, Japan has globalized it's culture far more than Korea has and you'd be hard pressed to even find lots of English on signs, slogans and whatnot outside the downtown core of a major city (which means English teachers there usually speak far more of the local tongue).

In Japan, you speak Japanese. In Beijing, you speak Mandarin. In America, you speak English. In Korea... PLEASE don't learn Korean! Here, we'll deface our own country just to make your short stay ambiguously easier!

This over eagerness to cater to English speakers makes Korea look like a country that isn't proud of it's culture and assumes foreigners are too stupid to learn Korean. I find it offensive to both Koreans and foreigners.

I noticed a business door that had a cartoon dog in a superhero or astronaut type outfit, with "Me dog uranus" underneath. Smile

One of my favorite was on the outside of an Ops bakery in Busan:

The Seoul subway logo that is supposed to mean "Zzziing Korea," or something like that, looks like, "Pissing Korea!"

Just a couple days ago I saw a program about education on KBS with English subtitles spelled wrong. When I was in the Army I saw the same thing a lot. Same went for a company I worked at. Because these slogans and use of English aren't really for foreigners. They're for Koreans to feel like they're in an advanced, popular country.

The other day my Korean coworkers were talking about the slogans and poking fun at them.

Koreans find them equally ridiculous.
