Anyone running on Linux?

I am thinking of building or buying a cheapee computer just to try out Linux and learn. What version should I get? Lindows? Mandrake?

Don't know much about dual-booting. Should I go that route? How do I do it?

Hrm the most popular ones in terms of support is probably Redhat. Very big distribution specific development, good support for new hardware, and not that hard to install. Probably the most polished out of the distros out there, and the closest to consumer acceptance.

That said, I prefer Debian, mainly because there are heaps of Debian advocates living around me and I can always pick their brains for solutions to my problems... :)

As for dualbooting, when you create your Linux and Linux swap partition, most installers can give you the option of loading a MBR level application called "LILO" (which stands for Linux Loader). It's pretty configurable, and you can specify a default OS to load after a certain period of time etc.

If you're just getting a cheapo machine for Linux, dont bother with dual boot, especially if you're going to have a Windows box separately.

It's nice to get your hands dirty with it, so definitely give it a try if you're interested in that sort of thing.

jae.

I downloaded a version called Knoppix that allows you to run off of a CD Rom to see what it looks like. Can't get the internet or my on-board sound to work, though. Sad

Still, it's fun to poke around.

I thought Red Hat was for servers or something, and ones like Mandrake and Lindows were supposed to be easier?

Now I'm worried about how to get drivers to work for my computer.

A whole new ballgame.

Is one better about driver support?
