Has anyone here traveled to Bhutan?
Is it worth visiting?
High-lights and low-lights would be good if you care to share them. |

I think Bhutan would be a great place to visit, except for one thing.....the set cost they charge for visitors.
If you want to visit Bhutan, you have to go with a registered tour operator and the government of Bhutan required that you pay a set price per day to visit Bhutan. Starting January of this year, that set price is $250 a day!
To me, that makes Bhutan not worth visiting. But, for some, that may still be worth it. That does include car hire, tour guide, 3 meals per day and accomodation. But, for me, personally, I don't think it'd be worth it, as it's quite expensive and I like to do things more independently.
I will say though, that with them having those restrictions, that it's pretty isolated in the sense that there aren't a ton of tourists that visit there. Also, from what I've seen there is some fantastic trekking to be had there.
So, if you have the money, I'd say sure, it's worth it....but if you are looking for a budget destination, forget it. |

Conclusion: I am never going to visit Bhutan.
Maybe I'll give Burma a go... |

I've been to Bhutan and I loved it. It is difficult to get over the amount the visa is per day, but if more poor countries did this they would be saving their natural resources and having eco-friendly tourism. When I went to Nepal there were no regulations, no rules, there was a one-time visa but you could see that the money was not being put into ensuring the life of tourism in Nepal. Hindus will serve you steak, because frankly you'll pay for it. It's cheap, you can visit the Himalayas and have a cultural experience. I do like Nepal, but I feel they could take a page from Bhutan's book.
Nothing is like Bhutan, not perfect, but absolutely wonderful. Ensuring that their country can continue to support their livelihoods.
Just the other side of the coin

| There are job positions and volunteering opportunities available. While I was there most of the people there were either going to meet someone they knew, researching, or working. Not a bad idea! |

Read the thread before you call someone an idiot. the OP said maybe he would give Burma a try. We call it Myanmar these days though. I spent 1 month there in the winter of 2010 and it is an amazing place. Not alot of tourists so you can feel like a real backpacker. If you are one for cheap travels its great for that too. Me and wife spent $1200 togther for 30 days including flights from Bangkok with Air asia. |

OP asked about Bhutan
yeah Myanmar is a great place to visit, been there 3 times, just be aware of the food at Inle Lake, got a bad case of food poisoning there last year |
