Daegu is dire Laughing Seoul... Cramped & uncomfortable. So, try Busan.

It is pretty easy to avoid the kind of GIs that would put you off. You can start by not going to juvenile night clubs like those that have 200 people in a space designed for 50 that play nothing but remixed rap songs for 20 minutes at a time (TinPan, TinPan 2 etc). Also avoid places that go out of their way to cater to soldiers.

Also: just go to the more Korean joints where GIs are banned (Mama and Papa Gorilla, for example).

What about the teachers that look like GI's?(i look like a GI with a buzzed head).

Do they just ask to see an ARC to distinguish?

From what I understand American military can't go to Hongdae (can someone confirm?) Also, since Seoul is so huge there are a few other places that (Sincheon, etc.) there won't be many military if any at all.

They're not supposed to go to Hongdae, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. My ex was military and we hung out there all the time.

I have an Army friend who told us they were banned from leaving base from that rape case. I don't know if it's just his base, though.

I'll admit that it's been about 6 months since I last went to the Tinpans, but last time I checked they are 98% Korean and 1% English teachers chasing after Koreans with 1% European tourists (not my kind of crowd). I have no idea about the military going to Tinpan comment.

I'm sure there may be some brave souls who go to Hongdae despite the restrictions but I guess the point is they aren't there in any large enough numbers to make a difference. Itaewon is where you'll see them everywhere. When I've gone to Hongdae its not been my experience to see any but I'm not looking either. To some extent you can tell who the military people are.

As or Daegu, generally the military and the teachers frequent different bars. The times I've hung out in Daegu, the military know they aren't wanted at the teacher spots and go to the bars that cater to them. Same with the girls. Some Korean girls are into the military guys and go to those places (like UN club in Itaewon).

The over all point is one can be both Seoul and Daegu and not have to mix much with the military. If you want to avoid them almost totally and want a large city Daejeon, Busan, Kwangju and Incheon I would think are the best choices.

I've lived in Daegu for two years~ it's a lot easier to get around and less hectic than Seoul... there are fewer foreigners casually strolling around than in Seoul, so that can be a problem unless you live near the downtown area.

The best place in Daegu would be near the downtown or in Suseong-gu (aka the rich part of town). I would not recommend living in Chilgok (been there, done that) as it is very poor and your living arrangements will most likely range from sub-par to hazardous to your health. (My place had red-tinged water from the 40 year-old pipes that stained the bathroom and made a rust-smell and was a bit scary to look at <which my boss refused to deal with for months and months and when he did, it didn't really do much> and was infested with so many ants that I couldn't have fresh food in the house... once I got rid of the ants (months and tons of cash and poisons and cleaning later) the giant flying cockroaches swarmed in >.>)

Daegu has tons of American-style restaurants and I've always gotten a big apartment when I've been here (2-3 bedrooms at each of the three hagwons I've been to), though I can't say that is the same for every one. Most hagwons are laid-back and see foreign classes as "play time" so, if you want to actually teach... look for a brand-named hagwon.

Hope that helps ^.^

Yes. My friends with short hair have a higher chance of actually getting carded, but your ID is what ultimately determines whether you get in or not.

I didnt know Hagwon and laid-back go in the same sentence! I guess I made the mistake of signing with a large well known Hagwon...

The problem is you cant avoid them when you want to go to the same venues ie a western club that plays hiphop and usa top 40 with alot of females.

I may be a bit biased toward Daegu since i have lived here longer than my time in Seoul.

However..I wonder. Can we assume that since you mention not wanting to share the same space with GI's, that you are making your choice of a city based on nightlife/bars/clubs?

If that is the case, I would say Seoul all the way. The nightlife there would be WAY much more diverse and active.

That said, I am curious to your aversion to soldiers. I mean...are you more concerned about the perceived violence/douchbaggery that they may bring to any given place...or the competition for the ladies that they may bring..or a combination of the two?

If your concern is the latter...I would advice that you dont have much to worry about in Daegu. The vast majority of soldiers floating around Daegu are no competition for any lady with eyes, glasses, contacts...etc Most of the GI's I see around the city are either 30+ something beer belly types..or otherwise thuggish wannabe 20 year olds...both of which are not exactly desired by either the local female population, or their own kind.

Most of the fit young stud guys who are soldiers are in the northern areas (naturally since they are pretty much next to the N. Korean border)..while the guys down here in Daegu seem to be mainly support personnel (meaning the city is not exactly teaming with in shape studs)

CoralReefer,

Insightful reply. Thanks.

I def need to have nightlife (the kind I like) in a city. One or two venues will do.

With that said I do not like the electronic and house music clubs which is what Seoul is filled with?. No chance what so ever to dance with girls. That isnt even dancing. More like jumping up and down and convulsing your body! lol On top of that it appears the guys and girls dance separately.

Im more concerned about the competition than any douchbagery. Although that is def annoying. It is nice to hear that its more older soldiers in Dague.

How many clubs in Dague play hiphop where you can actually dance with females?

Honestly, I wouldnt know. The only clubs I go to are salsa clubs. I do know however that there are at least one or two decent ones that do not allow GI's. The Daegu club scene is fairly limited from my understanding..but again as mentioned its not really my scene.

How is the latin scene in Dague? That is my main music and dance. Busan had a place where people danced salsa. I like bachata more.

Its not too bad considering Daegu's size. There are several salsa clubs in downtown. Check out the "salsa for foreigners in daegu" facebook page. There are bachata lessons each Saturday, followed by big social dance usually..then most others travel on out to yet another salsa club for more dancing the night away. Seems these saturday evening sessions are being cancelled at least once or twice a month for salsa parties organized by one club or another. Smile
