Too bad it doesn't fall on a Friday to make a 3-day weekend. Kind of random to have one day off in the middle of the week, but I want to make the most of it.
What are your plans? |

Although I am thankful for it, its almost seems like a waste of time as after arriving home late on Wednesday I cant be bothered to do much and then you cant really do a great deal on Thursday knowing that you have work again on Friday!
I know its been asked before but what is the actual reason why they dont just give the Friday as vacation? Seems to be the norm in most places except here and it really annoys me! |

If you consider that so many places, even public schools until just now, had six-day workweeks, there's really no point in moving a holiday to Friday or Monday.
Here are the holidays for this year/their dates/and the day(s) of the week on which they fall:
New Year Day/1 January/Sunday
Lunar New Year/22, 23, 24 Janaury/Sunday, Monday, Tuesday
Independence Movement Day/1 March/Thursday
Children's Day/5 May/Saturday
Buddha's Birthday/28 May/Monday
Memorial Day/6 June/Wednesday
Independence Day/15 August/Wednesday
Thanksgiving (Chuseok)/29, 30 September & 1 October/Saturday, Sunday, Monday
National Foundation Day/3 October/Wednesday
Christmas/25 December/Tuesday |

What I don't get is why have schools start on Friday? Why not just wait until Monday?
Oh yeah THAT MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE!!!!!!! |

Well, no offense...but maybe its because they arent lazy dolts who look for the slightest reason to give kids a break from school.
Despite the negative comments many here may have against Korean (or for that matter...Asian) education systems..they do not produce some of the most gifted students in the world based on this kind of logic.
What makes even less sense is to give kids (or more importantly the folks complaining about it) a Friday off for no other reason than convenience.
Look at it this way (since I am sure almost everyone here came to Korea to teach for their love of education and the opportunity to capture and nurture young minds) : Its just one more day that you will have chances to shine the bright light of the English language to people...enriching their lives and enabling them more opportunities for the future

Also a school year has to have a certain number of days/hours. A day off on Friday would mean a day less vacation later. Actually, generally I find I do get sandwich days here when holidays fall awkwardly. Not in this case, but still, more often than not. That rarely/never happens with schools back home, though I suppose getting weekend holidays moved to weekday days off happens back home but not here. |

Its not necessarily being lazy wanting to have a break, there are many studies which show that rest is beneficial to productivity and concentration of both workers and students.
When I worked in Spain and Mexico if the holiday was on a Thursday then you get the Thursday and Friday as vacation, i just wish it was the case here. |

Although i'd love friday off as well, in some senses it makes sense for the kids to come to school on friday.
The first day normally consists of handing out books, teachers learning names ect ect - so nothing too 'educational' is normally done anyway. Come monday they can start normal classes.
I know if I was a parent of one of these kids, and bearing in mind that they've just had 2 months off school i'd be quite annoyed if the school suddenly gave the teachers and kids an extra day off, just because a hol fell on a thur!

I think a 2 month break is ample! |
