I have been once for 2.2mil. One company tried for 2.6mil but I managed to get it in the end.

Currently know 2 teachers who are being screwed for severence and plane tickets and were never put into pension or NI plans...

That's all? It's unfortunate, but not that surprising. I have heard much worse.

I know a few who were cheated. Some got what they were owed others did not and some did not bother to try and just left.

It happens and is a sad by-product of the industry.

A better question would have been....Who doesn't know anyone who is being ripped off by a hagwon?

Everyone knows someone.

An even better question could be: how many people do you know who got cheated and how many who did not get cheated?

And the best question of all would be...........

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? And if it does make a sound, then how much money does your korean boss still owe you?

The proportions were high enough that it kept me (and 10 more just like me) busy at the help center for a decade.

I would hazard a guess that today the number being cheated (medical, pension, overtime, severance, taxation, unpaid wages in the last month, and 11th month terminations) is still better than 50% and back 10-12 years ago that number would have been close to 100%.

You have had extensive experience in that field Ttom.

As for the call centre I would say 100% of the people who called where getting cheated as it was afterall a help call center. Wink

People do get cheated, however the proportion would be hard to know with any sort of accuracy.

Everyone's experiences seem to differ and we can all agree some people do get cheated.

Ratios based on complaints / referrals / requests for advice vs issued E2s.

It may still be higher than 50% but that is where the numbers stack up now and the trend has been improving in spite of the influx of newbies post 2008.

my first visit to a Korean Labor Board, I was asked to wait for someone who spoke English.

I sat down and and the gentleman who eventually arrived - the very first thing he said to me was "you didn't get paid?"

and that was it. a phone call later, the next day all was well.

it doesn't always work that way, but sometimes it does.

After nearly one year of working for my hagwon, it became time to negotiate the next contract. Of course, the administration at my school completely deleted the portion of my contract which included the bonus (equal to one month's pay - 2.5 million KRW). They tried to rush me into signing the document, and the CEO himself was clearly upset when I pointed this out (speaking in Korean). When I mentioned that I would not take a pay cut, they acted completely surprised as to why I thought it was a pay cut, and added that the monthly payment was the same. When I elaborated and pulled out my previous contract (which was the exact same document, minus the bonus), they painfully re-added the 'bonus' part of my contract. That last year was hell, BTW.

I've been ripped off. Got to the city my hagwon was in, recruiter said it was 30 minutes from Seoul and it ended up being 30 min. by bus to take the subway just to get into Seoul. My hagwon also wouldn't pay my pension, health insurance and overtime they owed me. So my story isn't as bad as some other people but it was enough to make me quit after 6 months.
