I'm thinking of buying a wide screen monitor. Will this stretch video and images out? I don't want this. For example if I watch an episode of Seinfeld (pre wide screen), will it be stretched out? Or will there be two unused portions of my monitor at either side. BTW, I use VLC.

The default setting in VLC shouldn't stretch anything out - you'll have black bars on the sides.

Seoul101 is correct. VLC will use the correct aspect ratio for the video. The video will only get stretched if you set it to fill the entire screen.

one nice thing about VLC is you can manually choose from lots of different ratios, too.

It will only be stretched IF your monitor's resolution is not set to it's native res (i.e. using a 4:3 res with a 16:9 monitor). If you don't do that, then it will show up with black bars in VLC, but even if you did do that, like Swampfox said, you can manually set the resolution.

Yea, you have a LOT of control over what the picture looks like, both for the desktop and videos. I hated widescreen when it first started catching on, and I still prefer 4:3 (fullscreen), but I have both a widescreen TV and monitor and have no problems.
