Up until a couple of years ago, South Korea and Iran enjoyed relatively warm economic relations. Things were so well at one point, the Koreans even named the street that goes through Gangnam in Seoul as Tehran-no, in an apparent nod to the Iranians.
I remember one of my students would go to Iran on business a couple times a year to sell auto parts. I imagine his business is now suffering as the Iranians were one of the company's largest buyers. |

Not only does Seoul of Tehran-ro, but Tehran has a street named "Seoul street" (or whatever "street" is in Persian). The mosque in Itaewon was also sponsored by the government in an effort to make nice with Iran.
The world isn't black and white. Israel and Iran are having their own little dance, and the United States is having it's own little three way with them. Why should Korea care at all about the situation? It has no large Jewish population that spurs it's government to action, it has no sizable Palestinian/Arab/Persian/Muslim/et al population to push the other side.
In fact, as an energy importer, Korea's only real concern is that of energy. Yes, Iran is a trade partner, but the importation of oil is of paramount importance.
As far as the NPT goes, how are South Korea and China beneficiaries of it? You know that China is a nuclear power, right? So... why should it care about the spread of nuclear weapons any more/less than other countries? And as NK has abandoned the NPT, and it's threatened to engulf the south in a sea of fire, how has the NPT really helped the South? Actually, haven't some politicians been talking about developing a SK nuclear weapon, or at the very least, bringing back US tactical nuclear devices to the peninsula?
Seems like proliferation to me...
Finally, the whole Amadinijad/ wiping Israel off the planet thing. If you read up on it, not only was he talking about the regime of Israel, but it's been suggested that he was saying more along the lines that there needed to be a regime change in Israel - the exact same thing Bush was saying about Iran. He's got a sense of humor, people! He can't be ALL bad, can he? |

You're not the first to point that out on this site. If your Farsi is so good, maybe you can see fit to clean up some of these quotations:
Quote: |
July, 2006: "Nations in the region will be more furious every day. It won't take long before the wrath of the people turns into a terrible explosion that will wipe the Zionist entity off the map...The basic problem in the Islamic world is the existence of the Zionist regime, and the Islamic world and the region must mobilize to remove this problem. It is a usurper that our enemies made and imposed on the Muslim world, a regime that prevented the progress of the region's nations, a regime that all Muslims must join hands in isolating worldwide."
November, 2006: "The great powers created the Zionist regime to extend their domination in the region. Every day this regime is massacring Palestinians...As this regime goes against the path of life, we will soon see its disappearance and its destruction."
August, 2007: "The Zionist regime is the standard bearer of invasion, occupation and Satan...When the philosophy behind the establishment of a regime is in question, it is not unlikely that it will find itself on a course of decline and dissolution."
October 5, 2007: "Canada and Alaska have vast lands, why don't you relocate them over there and keep helping them over there with (aid of) 30 to 40 billion dollars per year for building a new existence over there?"
February, 2008: "World powers have created a black and dirty microbe named the Zionist regime and have unleashed it like a savage animal on the nations of the region."
October, 2010, to Hezbollah: "My dear ones, you are victorious and your enemies are defeated. You will stay and your enemies, who are the enemies of humanity, are on the slippery slope to destruction. You are honorable and respected and your Zionist enemies are shamed, wretched and pitiful." |
According to Ahmadinejad, the greatest evil afflicting the Middle East is the State of Israel. Now, I'm no fan of Israeli foreign policy, but coupled with his Holocaust denial, Ahmadinejad is correctly considered anti-Semitic. |

It's not really Ahmadinejad's call to make. He is losing power in Iran, and he may not be around much longer. The mullahs have most of the power and according to what most people say who know about the regime, they are mostly interested in keeping power than starting a war or being demolished.
