For me, the most irritating thing is when ajummas are chewing gum loudly. It drives me nuts. I hate the sound of gum being chewed.
So, when an ajumma sits down next to me on the subway while engaging in this act against humanity, I often find myself compelled to go elsewhere on the train even if there is no other seat available. |
You should hit her with your umbrella. I hear that's popular these days. |
FUNNY! |

Someone knocking on my neighbor's door and shouting for them for 20 minutes straight. You know, if they didn't answer in the first 30 seconds or so, they're probably not home.
Similarly, when someone calls me and I don't recognize the number and I'm not expecting a call, I don't usually answer it (especially if I'm working, of course). Yet they will let the phone ring for well over a minute, and then call back and do it again a few seconds later. (I have some cheap old cell phone with no apparent way to just reject the call without answering it and hanging up.)
Both of these things annoy the hell out of me. Anyone else notice this, or is it just me? |

...people talking in the apartment stairway. At 3am.
It sounds basically no different to shouting and it carries through the entire building. |

A somewhat related story about the phone thing. I was in the English class yesterday after classes had finished and the phone started ringing. I don't ever answer, because I know for a fact it isn't for me and I'm unlikely to get an English speaker on the other end, so they just kept ringing for at least 15 minutes. 15 minutes! That's an insane amount of time. Maybe it was a prank, but probably not. |

You type in "relaxing classical music" into youtube, only to discover that some Korean company has bought advertizing time at the front of it. So your relaxing classical music is prefaced by some ajoshi screaming into the camera about how excited he is about this or that product. As I'm emotionally prepared to listen to soothing classical music, being assaulted by this loud, obnoxious piece of 'Koreana' is most unpleasant. What's with Korea's fixation with making noise?
Youtube, what are you thinking? |

Youtube is nothing more than an advertising front for corporations now. I have sit through ad after ad in order to watch a few videos. I much preferred it when it was just videos. |

Well, they do host all those millions of videos on servers for you to watch for free. Who do you think pays for all that? I'd rather watch a 15-second ad than pay a subscription fee.
But yes, Korean ads do sound unnecessarily loud and annoying. |

^ doubly so when you've had a stressful day, and Korean noise has contributed to the stress, and instead of hearing beautiful relaxing music you once again get an earful (and headful) of noise (when you expected Vivaldi).
I'm not opposed to ads on youtube. It is an awesome free service. I'm grateful for it. What I object to is ajoshi screaming into the camera when I expected the very opposite of that. Unfortunately, noise is one of those one "frequent occurences" that is almost impossible to escape in Korea.

| The dinners....oh the freakin' dinners. I'm so sick of all the dinners at my school. It's like every other week. On the floor eating the SAME DISH week after week. I just want to go home...please! |

I've wondered that since I got here.
If you like your peace and quiet, this isn't the place for you.
Going to a restaurant for a quiet meal is a very rare occurrence unless you are the only patron there. (and even then there's often a TV blaring at volume 9)
The concept of inside voice/outside voice isn't practiced much here. Even in a small enclosed area like a restaurant, most conversations are at a near shouting volume.
Although...sometimes it seems similar to walking down the street and them either bumping you or moving for you. If they think you are of higher status, they may quiet down a bit. If they think they are of higher status, they are the loudest people in the restaurant. Normal behavior, but still annoying.
I more prefer the 'talk softly and carry a big stick' attitude, but maybe that's just me. |

| And every time I order a sandwich or a burger there is about fourteen times more lettuce than there should be. Slightly irritating and too frequent. I mean, I like lettuce and all but you have to make the whole thing work. |

*Loudspeaker trucks selling garlic and potatoes
*people walking up and down stairs(and pausing for long stretches at the entry to stairwells) while engrossed in their "dumb" phones.
*people that have no courtesy in lines and try to force their way in front of you
*no turn signal use
*every red light is run by several cars/cement trucks/buses before it is safe to go
*opahhhhhhhhhh
*whining as a way of life
*the smell of kimchi , soju and cigarettes
*people getting on elevators, buses and trains while those intending to get off are
pushed deeper in
*excessive, unrealistic, implausibly false patriotic claims
*scooters on sidewalks
*shameless greed |

These days it's the politicians on the loudspeaker trucks that annoy me. They also call my house to tell me who to vote for. |
