I'm meeting my friend/former co-worker/former Korean study partner next Saturday. She lives in a different city and I am taking a trip to see her and a couple of other close friends.

I want to buy her something really nice because she was very helpful with me. She really pushed me to study and to meet often and on time. I got into the habbit of arriving to study at the coffee shop late. After I had been late a few times in a row she confronted me about it, got angry and asked me "why are you always late?" "why don't you study harder"? and went on for a solid 5 minutes. It was intimidating BUT I was never late again and I studied hard. Some would say that she only wanted free English lessons, but she always made sure that I did the writing in the workbook and she was very helpful. She even took me to the police station when I needed my fingerprints done for my FBI check and I think of her as my older sister. She is 27 and a very traditional Korean young woman.

What are some good gift ideas???

Thanks!!!

There are lots of pretty plants in vases you can get her~ or ones that are charcoal can be nice, too~

Bokbunja (복분자) is a raspberry wine and I've seen it given as a gift, as well~ You can alcohol wrapped if you buy it at a wine store~ I was told that Koreans don't usually like champagne, but wine is okay~ If you go that route, don't be afraid to ask the store owner for advice ^.^

I think gift vouchers are thoughtful if you can get her the right one. What's she missing out on? Not enough good clothes, or not enough good music or xxx. Of course, you won't be insulting her by vaguely highlighting things she's without as that's not too frowned on here if it's an honest and reasonable gift (i.e. not a sex store voucher), and if you think it's something she would like.

Coach bags are nice, but Chanel would be more along the lines of what such a woman might expect.

It's hard to properly answer your question without first seeing a picture of the woman in question.

It seems like you have spent a good amount of time with her, so you should know what she likes. Get her one of those.

some of that advice is ok...

but really... I'd go to a department store, hit up SKII or a cosmetic stand and get a nice cosmetic set for her. All girls in Korea love cosmetics. It's functional and thoughtful.

And what better way to tell her to cover-up those wrinkles?

Haha

You think of her as your older sister, and you don't know what to get her?

Honestly though, do you care about this girl beyond the platonic sense? That plays a part in the answer.

I gather from the stories that your relationship might not be as you expected, unless there is more going on. paraphrasing, "I was often late to our meetings. One day she yelled at me for 5 minutes. She must really care about me."

I suggest not getting her something "really nice" i.e. expensive, but rather something edible (someone mentioned wine, also rice cakes, or chocolate are possibilities) or something personalized. For example, if the situation were reversed, I'd suggest to her to get you a watch or calendar/planner because you're often late. It's kind of cute, personal, and shows that you paid attention.

Hello Kitty backpack.

Get something from the cosmetics dept with a nice smell that isn't obviously trying to cover up crap on her face. You know, perfume, moisturizing lotion, fancy oils.

I guess wine or food could work but only if it's unique (to her).

There's also the safe date thing. Go somewhere neutral and fun, like an amusement park or the like.

Honestly even just a really nicely written card would be thoughtful.
