|

I must get a CBC by the end of my contract in July--they allowed me to stay one more year without getting one. But since I will have a F6 by then (which doesn't require a CBC as far as I know) will I need to get one? |

Also error on the side of caution. Get it done just in case.
Even that you are going to an F-6 still does not mean you do not need a CRC. If you want to continue to be a teacher - you will still need to have a CRC. The difference is who will ask for it as an E-2 - immigration. Now with new changes - MOE asks F- series for CRC (degrees, health check, too).
Now maybe you get a Uni, Adult job. The school still might ask for it. |

Sigh....
If you had been paying attention you would know that new legislation by the Korean government has closed up a loophole. In doing so has required some expats and koreans to need new paperwork. (Wanted murderers teaching will do that and ruin the fun for others).
This topic is coming up every couple of days now.
Also many people where able to not need to submit CRC last year because if they renewed with a school. Immigration gave a mulligan. But the caveat was people where to get a new one if the renewed the next time. Well for some F-series people. They may not have been asked because immigration did not need it. Being a F-series was a plus. Some schools might have asked. for CRC.
So now many F-series people now have to submit paperwork to the Ministry of Education now! That is for those that want to be teachers or teach English. Does not matter if you submitted it years ago to immigration, it is now needed by MOE. If you are lucky, maybe some paperwork can be copied and shown to MOE. But some will be needed again like health check and CRC. Got to keep out the stoners, crims, and sickies.
If you are running a bar or doing something besides teaching then no worries. I also do not know if adults matter or not. So maybe if you teach at a University then you might not need to worry about. I think MOE is more interested in protecting children and keeping outraged parents/voters calm. |

Thanks. I knew that in order to work for MOE i.e. public schools and such, I would need a CBC. I never plan on working for MOE. I would either work for a hagwon, after school program or go the entrepreneur route. Are you saying I would need a CBC for the latter? |

Yes. Before hand people who where of Korean Descent or married to a Korean did not need to supply a CRC. Well I think besides for basic F-series application. It was fine many schools could get a teacher quickly with out needing or waiting for paperwork. Some schools may have asked for.
You are confused about something. EPIK and SMOE and related are all of a different standard so they asked for a CRC, even if technically you did not need to submit one.
But as with any free ride, comes the trouble. Basically after recurrent busts of Korean American for drugs and heck finding 3 wanted murders teaching. Then of course changing them to foreigners. The citizens asking for these people/foreigners to be checked out. Never mind the E-2 and that had to do the checks. But time and again the F-series where skirting the law. (Reminds me of the one school I knew of with two gyopos that would regularly smoke weed outside school. Of course the pleasant intercity bus ride with them talking about drugs loudly in English for 2 hours. Or of the few 20 somethings with no degree teaching at schools or tutoring.)
So rather then immigration asking for proof of education and background, in which they could not ask for of F-series. The duty of checking has gone to MOE. Now MOE is asking for any hagwon, public school, lets just teacher to provide qualifications.
So if you have a criminal record and thought you could still teach since you are married to a Korean. Not anymore (well manybe Uni) you might have to change occupation.

Yep it is a hassle. Welcome to life and bureaucracy. It sucks and nothing is fair. With some foresight and planning this can be easily overcome. Like I say - treat the CRC like your toothbrush and password get a new one every six months. So every six months. Get your fingerprints taken, fill in the forms and mail it. If you are in no rush, go regular mail and slow government appostilling, save some money. So when the special day comes with SURPRISE your fired or now the Korean Agriculture department now wants criminal records from foreigners too. You can go done, next!
Maybe this might given you the clue of doing preventative research and intelligence gathering. So start reading the board more often. Keep an eye out for what may come in the future - hint hint drug tests. Or hmm EPIK/SMOE keeps downsizing should I rely on having my public school job next contract- hah all the children like me and this principal keeps saying I am a great teacher. I am safe. You snooze you loose. Actually looking at your history Dodge7 you have a good post record.
If some area can effect your life, why are not more people preparing with any available resources. I mean if reading 10 or 15 minutes a day of some Korean blogs and this forum can prevent me from loosing a couple million won in possible lost earnings or being screwed up via some easily avoidable situation. I think I could give up watching a tv show or two or stop reading some celebutard/sports news. Whoops it just came to me optimism bias.
This is the second time I have been surprised by Korea and visa issues. First transcripts, second criminal record checks. By GOD, I will not be surprised a third time. They almost got me with National not local checks, but I got past that. True I have been blessed with some luck and good schools. But I know... one day ... the bear is going to get me.
