Knew a guy who asked his girlfriend at the time to get a list of mailing addresses for all the universities in Korea. Got a job, too! |

In what part of the school website did you university advertise? Was it just under your departments website? was it in Korean?
I've checked out Kookmin and a few university websites in Seoul but can see where the job listings are posted.. |

Since you don't have a Master's, you might want to try looking into 2-year technical colleges. They often offer similar conditions and benefits as university jobs, but often don't require a graduate degree.
Don't be afraid to take hogwonguy's advice, either. If you don't have connections, but you're flexible about location, cast as wide a net as you can. There are hundreds of schools out there, find their addresses online (pretty much every uni and college in the country has an English page) and send them your resume blind. If you send out hundreds of resumes, most of them might go into the trash, but you only need one job.
Good luck! |
Wouldn't that just be a waste of time unless you knew for sure that they were hiring and/or the specific person to contact? |

my univ's ad was plain as day on its english website, took about 10 seconds to find. lots of univ advertise on their english website though some only do it in korean and that can be hard.
best advice is to know the korean word for professor (my computer doesnt support korean, its kyo su in) and look for that. also check on univ websites for a schools general affairs office they seem to do the hr work now
also if you show up to drop off a cv, at least look the part, last month a guy came by my school to drop off a resume and he looked and smelled like an absolute bum. at least guys wear a decent shirt and slacks, no jeans and god forbid TAKE A SHOWER before coming. It wouldn't matter if he was the best ESL teacher ever, if our school even took walk in cv's, he would have never gotten a second look. |

Rather than search the websites themselves, its better in my opinion and faster to just google search for the following.
Kookmin University + non-tenure + English job
most searches like that if you change the uni name will take you to that uni's hiring page IF they are currently hiring. If they are not...then they are not. |

Some schools don't advertise on here. Many just do so on their own websites. Our school advertises on here and a few years ago, got between 300 and 400 resumes. They had so many that they asked the PT'ers to just throw out the people with no photo or a bad photo. That cut out quite a few, anyway. |

Many schools never advertise at all when they're hiring, so if your resume happens to land on the right desk at the right time, it works. If you can't figure out the specific person to contact from the school's web site, "English Department" and "Dear Sir or Madam" will have to do. For the 297 schools that you never hear back from, it's a complete waste of time, paper, and postage. For the 3 schools that offer you an interview and a job, it's time very well spent. You only need one job, after all. |

| Thanks for everyone's responses, it's appreciated. I have been sending out applications on spec, but in most instances I can't find specific people to address them to. I suspect most will never find their way to the appropriate desk but here's hoping! |

Our university will be hiring a minimum of 3 this time around. Watch the job ads on Dave's, as they always buy an ad here.
Pay usually starts around 2.5 for 15 hours base work, plus OT for hours above that. Summer and Winter vacation, but now we're pretty much required to work some during those times (for extra pay). You get a shared office (used to get your own, but that changed this year) and a computer/desk. Raises continue at 100,000 per year, which is decent. I've been here 7 years, and they've always given me my yearly raise. They do pay private pension -- no yearly bonus.
Good luck getting in. They tend to like young people with prior experience that can give a great demo lesson. |

It's just as the ad says: children and adult non-credit classes. However, they are held on campus and the teachers on the enrichment side have offices and classrooms in the same building where the credit classes are taught.
I would imagine it is much, much, much better than a hogwan job in terms of conditions - certainly there are a number of teachers there that have been there a while and seem to enjoy it. But I have no first-hand knowledge on the level of students or course materials. |

| Erm, why is it lazy to take the time to write a post on a board which I know a lot of university teachers read asking if anyone knows of anything? By networking I know of a few positions which will be available in the fall which won't be advertised therefore these positions won't appear on any of the job boards I check daily or through the google searches I also do daily. I can't however network with the entire country hence why I asked here. And if your university was advertising anywhere there is a good chance it's one of several I have already applied to. |
you're a lazy a$$ for asking people here if their univ is hiring instead of doing your homework. 90% of the jobs aren't advertised here anymore, most are now done via the schools own websites or via word of mouth.
asking if a univ. is good is no problem here but asking people to hand you job leads is a bit much |
What's your problem dude? The guy was simply asking a question.
Would you talk to him like this in real life? |
