Anyone ever been to Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan? Is it really that cheap and undiscovered? |

Cheap if you can negotiate something close to local rates. Not so cheap if you agree to inflated tourist rates. Most people go with groups, so you'll see herds of tourists in the popular locales (Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara) during the tourist season (spring). If you go alone, learn some Russian, or at least how to read Cyrillic. |

Spent about 3 months traveling through Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan last year.
Both are fairly cheap if you do it alone.
Kyrgyzstan is much cheaper than Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan has a bit more tourism infrastructure.
If you want undiscovered go to Kazakhstan. I spent two weeks there and never met a tourist. Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan are still off the beaten track for most travelers, but they are no longer undiscovered.
Russian helps a lot when you are off the beaten track in either of these countries. In main tourist spots you will be fine with English.
Visas for both are not cheap. Kyrgyzstan is easy to get. Uzbekistan can be a headache depending on your nationality.
Could write a book about each place now but just thought I'd provide the basics you wanted to know. |
